POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Assistant Provost for Academic Engagement, the Director of Academic Advisement is a member of the Student Academic Engagement and Retention team and provides strategic vision and leadership to promote student academic success and engagement. Collaborating with the advising team, the Director is responsible for coordinating and ensuring delivery of high impact, equity-minded advising; supporting and facilitating the College's advising community; and innovating to improve advising services in the College.
In addition to the responsibilities in the CUNY Title Overview, the Director of Academic Advisement will:
Direct strategic planning efforts and collaboratively establishes advising service objectives. Ensure best use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources and alignment with regulations, institutional policies, strategic plans and service objectives.
Direct and collaborate with professional advising staff on programming and initiatives that support student success. Facilitate opportunities to learn about new programs, changes to existing programs, College priorities, and campus resources that benefit students.
Evaluate and implement best practices in advising and student services programming. Use data to improve student services.
Implement advising personnel resource allocation plans including hiring, training, supervision, and resolution of non-routine personnel issues.
Collaboratively foster the advising community within the College, facilitating information sharing; problem-solving; and advisor on-boarding, engagement, and development.
Serve and seek leadership on campus committees and councils related to advising and student services.
Develop and communicate systems and processes for supporting students who are struggling personally or academically. Consult with faculty and staff working with students who need support.
Lead or facilitate initiatives to support student academic performance and degree progress.
Maintains memberships in professional organizations, and confers with outside agencies and institutions.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate will have:
Master???s degree in one of the health sciences disciplines, student personnel, college counseling or a related field.
Minimum 4 years of demonstrated management and supervisory experience in academic advising at a college or university setting,
Demonstrated budget oversight and planning experience
Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and other administrators
Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills
Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities
Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Office Suite and student success management systems (i.e., Hobsons, Navigate, Degree Works)
Demonstrated excellence in oral and written communication skills as well as customer service.
Experience with a cohort/caseload advisement model
Understanding of and experience with student success focused programs.
CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW
Directs development and operations of academic counseling services.
Designs, implements and monitors a comprehensive academic advisement model and protocol
Oversees outcomes assessment and creates strategic plan to further enhance academic advisement services
Manages an academic advisement center to ensure consistent and reliable information is provided to students
Cultivates and maintains strategic partnerships; serves as primary liaison to faculty and administrators regarding academic counseling services; and works with academic departments to develop faculty advisement components
Administers all compliance and data integrity activities of academic counseling in accordance with University standards
Advises College administration on policy interpretation and execution regarding University academic counseling standards and best practices
Develops and manages unit budget
Manages professional and clerical staff
Performs related duties as assigned.
