The Office of Graduate Student Life & Development (GSLD) at Teachers College, Columbia University is seeking an Assistant Director who will support the College community’s initiatives focusing on students' sense of belonging to the College.

Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Graduate Student Life and Development, the Assistant Director will function as a member of the GSLD team to support community initiatives and a students sense of belonging to the College. The position’s focus will be supporting students in gaining a sense of community, understanding the variety of resources offered to them at TC and Columbia University, and providing programs and initiatives to allow students to find a balance between their academic and social identity at the College.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Community Development

• Implement developmental initiatives for students to engage with self development and initiatives including, but not limited to, cohorted experiences, workshops, and highlighting opportunities and speakers, internally and externally, that would compliment the students interpersonal and intrapersonal skills
• Build collaborative relationships with Teachers College and Columbia University offices that are resource and engagement based and find opportunities to highlight these offerings to TC students
• Oversee all aspects of the Student Life Ambassador program which includes the hiring, training, and supervision of 6 ambassadors.
• Work with the Student Life Ambassadors to send biweekly emails to their cohorts and implement monthly programs that are related to self-care, exploring NYC, understanding campus services, and social opportunities
• Provide a series of both on-campus and digital programming to allow students to connect with peers outside of the classroom

Student Organization Advising 

• Directly advise and support social and identity-based -related student organizations which includes, but not limited to, providing support with budget management, event execution, leadership development, annual transitions, institutional requirements and policies, intergroup dynamics, etc.

General GSLD Duties 

• Assist Associate Director with student programming such as New Student Orientation, Harlem Celebration Week, Graduate Student Appreciation Week, the Provost’s Student Excellence Awards and other programming initiatives
• Support with office and College-wide events and programs
• Serve as campus representative knowledgeable of resources and services available to students through Teachers College and Columbia University
• Represent GSLD on campus-wide committees and meetings as assigned by Associate Director
• Assist with recruitment, training and hiring of student employees
• Work with staff in fostering student engagement in the learning process through intentional programs and provide a high level of personal contact

Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education, training and experience
• 1-3 years of related experience
• Strong computer skills (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google, Canva) as well as the ability to use web-based technology
• Experience with providing exemplary customer service
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while being detail orientation and self-motivated
• Diligent attention to detail and meticulous record-keeping
• Demonstrated ability to supervise student staff
• Demonstrated success in event management and large-scale programming with the ability to work evenings and weekends when needed
• Proven understanding and commitment to values of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Ability to work effectively to create a culture of collegial relationships with all constituents, including students/alumni, faculty and administration
• Sound professional judgment and a strong sense of ethics

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate developmental conversations and trainings related to social justice and leadership.
• Experience working with faculty
• Proven ability and experience working with web-based platforms such as Salesforce, Banner, Canvas, etc.
