The English Department at Old Dominion University invites applications for a Lecturer of General Education Composition. This 10-month renewable appointment begins on July 25, 2024 and includes opportunities for summer teaching. The search committee is especially interested to hear from candidates who can provide evidence of inclusive teaching practices in course design, assignments, and classroom management.
Lecturers primarily teach 100-level genre-based composition courses and WAC/WID 200-level composition courses, but may also have opportunity to teach courses in their area of expertise, dependent upon programmatic needs. The position carries a 4/4 teaching load and service to two departmental committees.

A 1-2 page teaching philosophy articulating the applicant’s pedagogical approach and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The committee hopes to learn from the teaching philosophy how the applicant understands themselves as educator and how they would support and work with diverse learners.
A course assignment/activity/syllabus that illustrates innovation and/or inclusive teaching practices.

About the Department: The Department of English has an accomplished, diverse faculty and student body committed to equality, social justice, and transformative policies and practices. It offers a B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in English as well as an MFA program. The department also delivers courses in ODU’s General Education program, the Perry Honors College, Interdisciplinary Studies program, and ODU Global. Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants must have completed all M.A. or M.F.A. requirements in English or related field by July 24, 2023 and have expertise and/or experience teaching English composition.
Preferred Qualifications:
D. level graduate work or degree in Rhetoric, Composition, or Writing Studies.
Expertise in and ability/willingness to contribute to professional development in one or more of the following areas:
LGBTQIA+, LatinX, African American, Native American, and/or Asian American writing and cultural rhetorics.
WAC/WID, directed self-placement, and/or co-requisite/ALP models of composition.
UDL, accessibility, and/or disability studies.
Multiliteracy expertise, such as digital, AI, social–emotional learning, and information literacies.
