Departmental Overview

University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) helps build Berkeley's excellence through communications, public outreach, and fundraising to raise public awareness about Berkeley and increase private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus's philanthropic advancement strategies and strengthens campus unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. It handles a range of central activities and services encompassing prospect development, communications, donor stewardship, gift management, data management, and more.

The Student Experience & Diversity (SED) Philanthropy program, situated within UDAR, builds innovative philanthropic partnerships to ensure that belonging, discovery, and financial access are integral to every Berkeley student's education. The SED program primarily raises major gifts in support of student aid, co-curricular activities, and equity and inclusion. The team interfaces with a broad range of divisions and academic units on campus, and serves as the primary fundraising entity for the divisions of Equity & Inclusion, Undergraduate Education, and Student Affairs.

The Associate Director of Development, SED is a Northern California based position with the ability to travel frequently to campus as needed. This position will be a self-driven leader with a high degree of knowledge in the field of fundraising and recognized expertise in the field of student success and equity programs. Using advanced fundraising concepts, they will plan, organize, and direct complex large-scale fundraising campaigns with multiple stakeholders. Results have a major impact on student emergency grant fundraising and student equity and success programs. This position includes managing a portfolio of donors capable of giving gifts $100,000+. May lead the planning of functions, meetings and serve on internal / external committees as a student success representative. The position is expected to raise $1M+ as established by the maturity of portfolio.

Responsibilities

Plans, organizes, and directs large-scale, fundraising campaigns which include multiple components. Will serve as an expert and lead development professional for student success services.

Analyzes needs and assists in the development and implementation of the strategic plan for SED fundraising and advancement programs.

Ensures that predetermined fundraising goals are met and implements program activities to achieve these goals.

Develops and manages a dynamic portfolio of 75+ to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects for gifts in the agreed upon range. May include corporate and foundation prospects.

May lead the development of functions, meetings and serve on internal / external committees as a representative.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
• Advanced working knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education generally. Advanced working knowledge of the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
• Strong written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain excellent working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies, along with strong customer service skills, and guiding project managers to reasonable expectations to meet fundraising goals.
• Advanced working knowledge of emergency grant and student support program fundraising, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education generally.
• Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Ability to make persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.

• Advanced organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution, and strong project management skills.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $115,000 - $130,000, commensuratew with experience.

• This is an exempt, monthly paid position, eligible for full UC benefits.
• This is a hybrid position, eligible for 65% remote capability. This is a Northern California based position.
