Reporting to the Director, Strategic Initiatives, Senior Project Managers lead highly visible, large, and complex projects through the full project lifecycle, overseeing the delivery of multiple large and/or complex projects, usually within Finance and Administration.
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for coordinating activities of project teams and stakeholders, identifying appropriate resources needed, and developing schedules to ensure timely project completion. The Senior Project Manager is responsible for assisting in assembling project teams, identifying key stakeholders, leading stakeholder management, producing project artifacts, capturing and managing project risks, action items, issues, and key decisions throughout the project lifecycle, providing status reports, and assisting in developing the strategy and roadmap for the project. Functionally responsive to client needs, the Senior Project Manager collaborates effectively with clients to successfully deliver projects. Success in this role requires the incumbent to promote initiative transparency, guide stakeholder engagement, collaborate effectively, and partner with the client to ensure successful project delivery.
Responsibilities:
Manages high-priority, large project(s) or multiple projects simultaneously from start to finish, impacting the institution at-large or multiple institutions.
25% Creates a project plan, monitors progress and performance against the project plan, and identifies, resolves, or escalates risks and issues
5% Manages the activities of outside contractors to ensure they are integrated into the project and that the organization receives satisfactory standards of service
20% Facilitates the estimation of project costs, resources, and time required to complete the assigned phase of a project and monitors activities, negotiates for resources, and assigns tasks to ensure these targets are met. Follows established change control processes if targets can no longer be met
20% Prepares regular reports to communicate the status of the project within and beyond the project team
25% Sets priorities, allocates tasks, and collaborates with project staff to meet project targets and milestones
5% Provides project management mentorship and knowledge sharing

Qualifications:
REQUIRED: 1. Five (5) years of experience in formal project management frameworks demonstrating: a. Knowledge of project management tools, processes, techniques, and best practices, b. Ability to apply project management frameworks to meet project requirements, c. Effective behaviors and interpersonal skills to successfully implement multiple, related projects. d. Strong planning, organization, and analytical skills. 2. Experience directly managing mid-size and/or multiple smaller, complex projects. 3. Strong problem solving and creative skills, along with the ability to exercise sound judgment in decision-making. 4. Experience leading cross-functional teams, building highly collaborative and effective working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, and resolving issues. 5. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate sensitive information effectively. 6. Demonstrated experience working effectively with senior leaders and ability to act as a partner and trusted advisor.
PREFERRED: 1. Seven (7) or more years of formal project management experience and a strong track record on large-scale implementations within complex environments. 2. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification strongly preferred 3. Demonstrated ability to successfully lead organizational change. 4. Previous experience with formalized stage & gate processes. 5. Experience working in non-profit, government, health care, higher-education, or other complex management/governance environment. 6. Demonstrated success influencing without authority.
License/Certification:
Preferred PMP - Project Management Professional Certification If a candidate has not yet attained the PMP, but meets all criteria to do so by the Project Management Institute, the candidate will be required to obtain certification within 6 months of their start date.

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Terminal, 24 month appointment. This position has the possibility to be extended or converted to an ongoing appointment based on need and/or funding
Salary:

Additional Information:
This Project Manager position is associated with the implementation of the Workday enterprise resource planning (ERP) system at UW-Madison. Funding supporting this position is expected to end in December 2025.
