The Department of History is located within the College of Arts and Sciences. The College strives to foster and sustain an engaging culture of discovery, creativity, teaching, learning, and collaboration, enriched by a diversity of experiences and perspectives. We are especially interested in recruiting candidates who can contribute, through their teaching, scholarly/creative work, and/or service, to our efforts to meet the challenge of achieving inclusive excellence in our academic community. The College takes a cohort-based approach to faculty success, providing resources and support within the Dean’s Office and through collaboration with Arts and Sciences departments and schools, leadership teams in other colleges, and university-serving partners such as the Center for Faculty Excellence. The Department of History currently has 12 full-time faculty members serving 70 undergraduate majors, more than 200 minors, and approximately 30 graduate students. The Department recently redesigned its Bachelor of Arts degree in History, building it around the development of historical thinking as a key for successful careers and citizenship in a diverse and global society. Essential Functions
The successful candidate will typically teach five courses per academic year primarily related to the history of the “US and the World,” including senior-level classes in the United States and the World, 1775-1945 (HIST 4214) and the Cold War era(HIST 4224). The candidate may also teach graduate or undergraduate courses such as: a) digital history; b) the history of international military engagements (viz., American military history, the Vietnam War, and American military engagements post 9/11); c) US and world history courses that are part of the general education program; or d) core classes in the department’s layered curriculum (e.g., the historian’s craft, historical writing, public history, historiography, professional practices in history). Teaching is primarily in-person, with the possibility of teaching online depending on student demand. The successful candidate is expected to advise graduate students in the thesis, public history, and exam tracks.
The successful candidate will develop a strong research agenda centered on the engagement of the US in the world that leads to publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters in edited scholarly volumes, books, or creative public history works such as curated museum exhibits. Experience in digital exhibits, online databases and other forms of interactive digital media is desirable. Service expectations include participation in department and university committees and recruitment activities plus engagement in service in professional organizations. Involvement in history-based outreach and community service is encouraged.
Minimum Qualifications
- Ph.D. in history or closely related field (e.g., American Studies) conferred by the end of December 2023.
- Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in American international relations since 1776, as demonstrated by teaching experience, graduate training in teaching, or scholarly engagement in the field.
- At least one year of experience as instructor of record in history courses, or two years as teaching assistant.
- Original research in US or international history as attested in a writing sample and a record of presentations in professional conferences and publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters in edited scholarly volumes, books, or creative public history works such as curated museum exhibits.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in developing or leading digital history products, as demonstrated in artifacts such as a public internet page ora submitted grant proposal to support public history efforts.
- At least one peer-reviewed research article published in the last five years.
