JOB SUMMARY The Planner II – Urban Design / Graphics Visualization is responsible for preparing and updating architectural/urban design technical drawings and graphics related to Planning/Urban Design Studies and development applications through the planning process, and to support decision making under legislated planning requirements and prescribed timing/deadlines related to Bill 109/23.
The Planner II – Urban Design / Graphics Visualization position will also prepare and maintain visual products to support planning, urban design and architectural visualization, thematic and legislative mapping by creating audience-targeted, engaging visual materials for consumption by the public, Council and stakeholders using a variety of source material, client content, site visit information, data (text and/or image files) and relevant software applications for digital or print publication and/or display.
The position is also responsible for providing professional design graphic advice to support the preparation of design graphics to illustrate site planning, built form, streetscape, and landscape architecture, applicable to official plan amendments, re-zoning, subdivision, minor variance, severance, and site plan applications.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
In an inter-disciplinary team environment, you will undertake the following:
Create architectural/urban design graphics and drawings to support the analysis of development applications and internal decision making, within time-based constraints of applicable Planning legislation and related processes;
Support the Urban Design group in the review and processing of development applications, special studies and projects by generating 3D modelling of development proposals and/or concepts, including renderings and illustrations;
Generate and contribute towards innovative graphic design solutions by preparing/maintaining planning related visual documents, presentations, brochures, displays, graphics, CAD and 3D models (including fly/walk/drive through scenarios), and thematic maps that support the operational needs of the City’s Planning and Urban Design function, including content to support staff attending Ontario Land Tribunal proceedings, community consultation meetings and/or events;
Prepare analysis and peer review for line of sight analysis, visual impacts assessments, skyline and view corridors, sun/shadow modelling;
Prepare, maintain and verify mapping requirements related to the Official Plan and Zoning By-law initiatives
Participate in the development of the City’s 3D Model
Retrieve, manipulate and translate data from a variety of file formats and sources
Prepare captivating and engaging reports publications for digital or print consumption
Liaise and consult with City staff regarding graphic design needs and methods of conveying intended messages to targeted audiences
Arrange for production of communications materials, obtaining quotes, and negotiating deadlines with internal and external suppliers
Work with other departments, such as Corporate Communications to ensure compliance with City/AODA requirements in relation to special initiatives and projects
Identify/recommend new and cost-effective operational and software needs required for design and graphic production methods
Develop new graphic visualization initiatives to promote the City's Urban Design agenda
Work with the latest technologies including AMANDA and E-Plan
Perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
Post-secondary education in an applied design, graphic design, technology or related program, or a combination of education and 3 to 5 years of related experience;
Well-developed presentation and graphic communication skills with demonstrated experience in visualization, producing plans, maps, CAD and 3D models, GIS (cartography/geomatics), renderings, digital and print publications/displays including ability to create, modify and manipulate planning and urban design concepts/proposals to support decision making and Departmental initiatives;
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suites, ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD/AutoDesk (Revit), SketchUp, Project Dox and AMANDA are an asset;
Awareness of the Planning and municipal approval processes, such as the Official Plan Amendment, Zoning By-law Amendment, Site Plan Control etc.,
Familiarity with Urban Design with an understanding of built form, public realm and community design
Able to read and understand architectural and landscape drawings including Site Plans, Draft Plans of Subdivision, Floor Plans, Elevations, Streetscape, Details, Grading and Strata Plans;
Able to successfully negotiate and liaise, using communication, interpersonal, customer service and leadership skills, with internal and external stakeholders
Able to meet deadlines under pressure using strong organizational, time management and problem solving skills with minimum direct supervision
