We are inviting applicants to apply for a full-time, non-tenure research faculty position. We are accepting applications for the ranks of Research Professor and Research Associate Professor. The rank of the selected candidate will depend upon the candidate's qualifications. This position offers the opportunity to focus on research in the Center for the Management of Information for Safe and Sustainable Transportation (CMISST). We are looking for individuals who would like to join UMTRI long term and who will contribute to the excellence and diversity of our research efforts. Individuals being considered for senior level faculty positions must be able to demonstrate leadership skills. The intended start date for this research faculty position will be in the Fall of 2024 and would require the individual to live in or relocate to Southeastern Michigan.
We offer an interdisciplinary environment that includes engineers, psychologists, behavioral scientists, and statisticians working on projects funded by government and industry sponsors. CMISST focuses on data analysis to answer a wide variety of questions about transportation safety and mobility. CMISST faculty and staff include statisticians, epidemiologists, programmers and project managers who help bring in, analyze, and make data available to the public. CMISST has a strong track record of safety data analyses, especially using crash data, often in combination with other datasets (e.g., driving, travel, roadway, etc). Topics include assessment of safety benefits of vehicle technologies, methods for operational data capture and evaluation of safety performance, and estimation of crash risk factors and countermeasures. UMTRI is offering a substantial commitment for the first three years in the position. This includes 50% flexible salary support for three years and guaranteed 50% project-funded support in the first year. Project-funded support after the first year will be obtained in collaboration with UMTRI faculty.
The University of Michigan has established two research faculty tracks: Research Scientist and Research Professor. While this role is currently for the Research Professor, it is important to note that there are many possible trajectories for career promotion at UMTRI, including crossing from one track to the other.
Successful applicants must hold a Ph.D. in any field and either a Master's in a field associated with data analysis (e.g., Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Data Science, etc.) or other practical experience with statistical methods.
Candidates should have a record of scholarly research and publications that demonstrates potential for success in the field.

Demonstrated potential to develop successful proposals for research funding, from both government and industry sponsors.
Research experience and interest in analysis of crash data.
Experience with and an interest in classical statistical methods. (Machine learning experience is a bonus.)
A record of both independent and collaborative research based on extramural funding.
Ability to lead journal article development as demonstrated by authorship in peer-reviewed journal articles.
