The Department of Communication and Media at the State University of New York at Oneonta invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Communication and Media. This position is a joint appointment in the Department's Communication Studies and Media Studies programs. The Department seeks a teacher-scholar who has teaching experience and/or scholarly expertise in Digital Communication and Social Media. The appointment begins Fall 2024.
The Department of Communication and Media offers two-degree programs - Communication Studies and Media Studies with over 300 majors, 17 full-time faculty, and 10 part-time faculty members. The Department houses a community of thriving teachers, scholars, artists, and practitioners across both fields of study. Students working toward degrees in these programs take courses that combine scholarly analysis and practical application in an ever-changing communication and media landscape. Our students graduate with a greater appreciation and understanding of the vital roles communication and media play in social change while building essential communication and media skills that prepare them to engage in the world as participatory citizens. Duties include but not limited to:
Teaching and developing courses related to digital communication and social media in the Communication Studies and Media Studies programs
Contributing to the development of a social media minor
Supervising students working with social media accounts as part of a growing internship program
Engaging in scholarly research in the candidate's area of expertise
Completing Departmental and University-wide service
Advising and mentoring undergraduate students
Engaging in continuing professional development
Participating in cross-disciplinary initiatives.
This position typically requires teaching 21 credit hours per academic year.

Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Communication Studies, Media Studies, or closely related field (ABD considered; completion required by date of appointment).
Evidence of inclusive excellence and high-impact practices in undergraduate teaching.
Dedication to scholarship.
Academic interests that align with the Department's commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
Also Considered:
Experience teaching across the fields of Communication Studies and Media Studies.
The ability to teach courses across both curricula, including but not limited to Strategic Communication and Persuasion in Communication Studies and Digital Storytelling and New Media and Society in Media Studies.
Ability to develop and expand the Department's course offerings in digital communication and social media.
An active scholarly agenda.
Experience in the production of professional social media content.
Demonstrated commitment to service at department, university, and professional levels.
Experience in teaching, mentoring, researching, or service with diverse and/or multicultural populations.
