Position Details:
The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication is recruiting for eight entry-level Journalist/News Fellows with the recently created Murrow News Fellowship Program.
This Murrow News Fellowship Program is in conjunction with a Washington state-funded initiative to bolster the state's civic and public affairs coverage. Each fellow will be placed with a local news organization in Washington state for a two-year fixed-term appointment. These positions will also provide fellows with an opportunity to earn a digital news certificate. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
Summary of Duties:
The Journalist/News Fellow will gather, write, and produce civic journalism of interest to their assigned newsroom's audiences and news beats; these topics may include health, education, economic development, environment, criminal justice, and under-represented communities. The Journalist/News Fellow may be required to produce content in various formats, including audio, video, text, and digital presentations. The assigned newsroom will provide editing, guidance, and professional support for a fellow in collaboration with Murrow's Program Manager.
The Journalist/News Fellow positions will be located with a Washington state news organization to be determined. Candidates may indicate a general preference for potential assignment, by location and beats in the cover letter. Host newsrooms may be located in rural, suburban, or urban communities.
Required Qualifications:
Positions require a Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to area of specialization. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
Position requires a degree in journalism, broadcasting, communications, or closely related field.
Strong news reporting skills to produce quality journalism.
Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree from any accredited higher ed institution in Washington state.
Knowledge of Washington state community issues.
Experience or training in new technologies for the gathering and delivery of news.
Experience using social media in a news environment.
Experience researching complex issues.
Possession of, or ability to obtain at time of hire, a valid, unrestricted driver's license.
Monthly Salary: $4,120.91 - $4,583.33 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
