Job Description We are seeking a full-time Research Specialist (RS) position with the renowned Framingham Heart Study Brain Aging Program (FHS-BAP). This position is through Boston University (BU), and we have campuses in both Framingham and Boston. This multi-faceted position requires someone who is mature, independent, proactive, and comfortable working in an unstructured, non-traditional, environment with limited supervision. Exceptional communication skills are essential. The RS will work with a team devoted to increasing inclusive representation in the science of aging. The goal of this project is to establish trusting relationships with people minoritized as Black, identify needs and priorities of the community, develop strategies to increase participation in research, and implement study procedures with participants.
The primary initial responsibility of the RS will be to assist in building these relationships with groups and organizations that self-identify as Black or African American and assist in developing a recruitment strategy. This involves identifying local leaders, establishing contact, arranging meetings, keeping organized meeting minutes, and maintaining regular contact with community partners. After implementation of the recruitment strategy, responsibilities will include soliciting and tracking responses to recruitment efforts, revising the protocol, recruiting, conducting in-person or remote study visits, conducting in-person or remote study visits, providing coaching for using cognitive applications, running quality control checks to ensure data is flowing properly, and aiding in data analysis.
This job involves working with elderly participants who may be cognitively impaired, so experience with sensitive populations and patient facing or customer care experience are a plus. Applicants must possess a BA or BS degree in neuroscience, psychology, public health or related social and life science field plus two or more years of research experience working with human subjects and/or community outreach, excellent communication and organizational skills, a commitment to increasing inclusivity and diversity in scientific research, and an interest in the application of mobile and remote technology to improve and monitor cognitive health at scale.
Additional specific responsibilities: in collaboration with our consultants, identifying local leaders in the Black community and establishing/maintaining relationships; schedule meetings, keep accurate notes, revise recruitment protocol; prepare data summaries in forms of reports and presentations; collect digital phenotypic data through smartphone applications; provide on-going tech support and coaching; collate, manage and analyze data associated with digitally assessed cognition; take part in general project management and meeting administrative and funding organizations reporting requirements.
Required Skills Required knowledge, skills, abilities/competencies typically needed to perform this job successfully: excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfort with engaging in unsolicited outreach to community members; ability to work independently and effectively collaborate with other staff in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating institutions, and community members; solid analytical skills and attention to detail; ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments; documented excellent skills for protocol and manual documentation; experience with troubleshooting technology (training will be provided for all tech/apps).
