Summary
Senior Lighting Designers must be highly motivated, inspirational team members who are organized, knowledgeable and understand industry needs. Senior Lighting Designers operate as the ‘day-to-day’ lead designer and project manager for their associated projects. The Senior Lighting Designer is responsible for ‘bringing design solutions to life’, which adhere to the established firm design, branding and creative direction. They are expected to be proficient in all phases of work, be able to lead and mange a project at the highest level and represent the firm externally to all parties.
Responsibilities
Work directly with firm leadership on all project work and overall creative direction. Provide project design and team leadership.
Complete all phases of project lighting design, starting from the original concept through final phases.
Directly responsible for developing all project deliverables, in conjunction with overall firm direction.
Implements all project quality control, management for design and documentation.
Deliverables include but not limited to: presentations, drawings (sketch, CAD, Revit), specifications, fixture selections, detail developments, budgets, calculations, mock ups, control diagrams, narratives, etc.,
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, on budget and per project schedule(s).
Directly responsible for workflow of any support staff – Designers, Junior Designers, Interns, etc.
Assess project needs regarding staffing levels with an emphasis on utilization and profitability.
Provide lighting design solutions appropriate with any client briefs, budget and or standards.
Attend client and design team meetings, sometimes involving travel, as required.
Create and present lighting design to client/team to ‘sell’ concepts.
Provide onsite construction management of lighting installation. Issue field reports to design team, supervise final aiming of lighting fixtures and controls programming.
Develop and manage project’s fee, prepare reports and participates in monthly invoicing process for assigned projects.
Have detailed knowledge (expert) of design industry standards and be able to collaborate within an interdisciplinary setting.
Communicate with client team confidently and clearly. Be effective in exchanging ideas, thoughts, opinions, knowledge so that the message is received and understood with clarity and purpose.
Deliver quality control procedures as they relate to design objectives.
Develop, coach and mentor support staff.
Client Management: Responsible for developing and maintaining current client relationships. Be the primary liaison to clients to ensure their needs are met and exceeded. Recognize opportunities to expand roles and relationships where possible. Maintain continuous communications with clients to generate further relationships.
Additional Responsibilities
LEED Certification coordination.
3D Modeling or rendering.
Proposal writing (where applicable to client relationships). Create written ‘pitch’ based on a scope of work, schedule and derive fee to support effort.
Business Development: Work with firm leadership, to develop a strategy for pursuing additional clients in both existing scenarios as well as new opportunities for business and revenue growth. Be able to promote the brand, gain deep intelligence of new markets, and understand the competition. Participate in networking and outreach efforts to create relationships and new business. Work w/ leadership to scope projects, set schedules and populate and maintain a client pipeline.
Qualifications and Requirements include:
An accredited professional degree within the design industry (i.e. architecture, lighting design, interior design, etc.) – or work equivalent
5+ years of lighting industry experience
Excellent client management skills
Expertise in AutoCAD & Revit
Fluency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook)
Fluency in Adobe CS3 (InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop, Illustrator)
Proficiency in AGI 3.2 or other lighting calculation software
Expertise with CA Title 24 code compliance (commercial and residential versions)
Excellent attention to detail
Great time management skills
Ability to manage project, team members
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and English proficiency
