The Position
The City of Fairfax is seeking a strategic City Manager to lead a high-performing team that works to implement Council goals and community priorities. The City has a long history of stable and effective city management and sound financial management and has well-educated and engaged residents. The current City Manager is retiring in early spring after 42 years of local government service with five Virginia communities. Directing the day-to-day operations of the City, the City Manager provides leadership and supervision to departments and oversees and evaluates the effectiveness of City operations. The leader assists with and oversees coordinating major department initiatives to achieve City Council goals and objectives. In addition to advising the Council through actionable recommendations, the City Manager leads the executive leadership team in implementing actions that carry out the City Council's policies.
The City Manager actively connects with the community, City employees, and elected government officials to translate the City's vision and goals into action plans. As the Chief Executive Officer for the City, the City Manager represents the City’s interests and positions before legislative and rule-making authorities at all levels of government and effectively represents the City to the public and all outside agencies. The City Manager is a visible representative at press conferences and acts as the City’s official representative through personal contacts and appearances before citizen groups and community organizations. By engaging the community, the City Manager develops positive external relationships and advises the City on partnerships and other cooperative efforts. The City Manager is visible in the community and meets and confers with local businesses, groups, and other government officials regarding issues, needs, and problems facing the City.

The next City Manager will be adept at balancing needs to ensure a high level of services are delivered effectively, key capital projects and infrastructure needs are addressed, and the City will be able to retain its strong fiscal position. Compensation and Benefits

Bachelor’s degree in government, public administration, business administration, or related field and ten (10) years of progressively responsible work experience in a senior-level position in local government or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. Residency within the city limits within a reasonable time after appointment is required by the City Charter.
Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree, ICMA-CM and significant project management, and capital project delivery experience. Additionally, experience in budget development and financial management, strategic thinking and planning and implementation, economic development and redevelopment, intergovernmental relations, business and community engagement, and providing exceptional customer service is preferred.
