Position Summary

The Senior Mechanical Engineer/Project Manager position holds a significant role, being a crucial source of mechanical engineering knowledge and a key leader in project management for all major projects across the campus. These projects encompass plant facilities, utility distribution systems, existing structures, new constructions, and extensive renovations.

This is an on-site, benefits-eligible position with a hiring range of $93,100 - $116,980 a year, dependent on experience and qualifications. A flexible work schedule is available.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Engineering, Industrial Engineering or closely related field
• Five years of related experience as a design, operations, or construction engineer
• Skills
  • Knowledge of control systems and their coordination between mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems
  • Effective written, presentation, and verbal communication - especially in communicating technical issues to a wide variety of audiences
  • Effectively collaborate across engineering disciplines
  • Knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects

Essential Functions

• Assists with defining design criteria, scope definition and justification, and developing design concepts for all University projects
• Assists with the feasibility review of all new projects
• Assists with engineering evaluation and review of all design documents, specifications, and special requirements for the project from design through construction administration phases
• Assists with providing technical guidance and issue resolution on all projects
• Assists with the selection of engineering design professionals and coordinates with them regarding Rice's Design Standards through the design process
• Assists with providing consultation on the operation and maintenance of building systems
• Works with estimators to ensure the appropriate mechanical costs are captured and project budgets are met
• Assists with interfacing between the various groups within Facilities
• Has strong knowledge of Rice's Design Standards and assists in the effort to improve those standards and drive innovative solutions
• Completes special projects as the primary project manager through the management of project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout, as required
• Performs all other duties as assigned

Preferences

• Texas Licensed Professional Engineer
• Experience in higher education or healthcare projects, or as a facilities engineer for a major institution or campus
• Experience that includes project management on mechanical and infrastructure projects
• Experience with energy-efficient or LEED-certified mechanical design.
• Experience with building automation and control systems integration.
• Experience with project management information management systems
• Experience with office and construction productivity software (Microsoft, Adobe, Procure, etc.)

Workplace Requirements

Must be willing to work in a temporary construction office. This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency. Must be able to lift 20 pounds and frequent project sites.
