Position Summary and Responsibilities The Vassar Innovation Lab is a makerspace open to all members of the Vassar community. As part of Academic Computing Services, the Innovation Lab seeks to support and promote teaching and learning in emerging technologies with an emphasis on digital design and fabrication. We want to excite people with the possibilities that new technologies enable, and provide the tools and expertise to bring their visions to fruition.
The Vassar Innovation Lab Manager supports the college in the use of design and fabrication technologies in the Vassar Innovation Lab.
Position responsibilities include: Daily Operations of the Innovation Lab (40%)
Oversee equipment, maintenance, safety, and scheduling;
Track lab usage, materials, and expenditures;
Purchase of lab supplies and equipment;
Update and maintain safety guidelines and records;
Support daily lab visitors with project consultations and planning;
Management and Training (40%)
Hire, train, and supervise student employees;
Develop and present training workshops on design methods and lab procedures;
Provide operational and safety training to student employees and VIL visitors;
Collaboration and Support (20%)
Develop and participate in promotions and events that expand the reach of the facility to a broader audience;
Collaborate with faculty in the development and support of curricular projects;
Stay current with emerging maker technologies and trends through professional development activities.
Qualifications Required skills and experience:
Experience and skills in 3D design and fabrication;
Experience using and maintaining 3D printers and laser cutters;
Software and hardware skills should include some combination of: Adobe Creative Suite; 3D modeling/creation tools; 3D scanning; vinyl cutters; photography; photogrammetry; drone mapping;
Experience with designing and teaching technology workshops;
Knowledge of maker culture and passion for creating and maintaining that culture at Vassar;
Excellent teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills;
Ability to plan, multi-task and manage time effectively;
Strong writing and editing background;
Education/Certification:
Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience in 3D design, fabrication, art, architecture, digital and applied technologies or a related field is required.
