1. Oversees the production and manufacturing of all New Haven frontlist titles on schedule and within budget. 2. Hires, trains, and supervises the work of Production Controllers; monitors workloads, vendor assignments, and resolves scheduling and manufacturing issues. Sets and implements department procedures. 3. Sets procedures to ensure efficient and consistent workflow in the EDP department, among production controllers, designers and manuscript editors. 4. Monitors composition, print, ebook, and component vendors for price and performance, evaluates new vendors, and implements new systems and solutions. 5. Monitors changes to schedules and print quantities. 6. Manages the production of new titles from edited manuscript through bound books, ebooks, and electronic archiving: a. Prepares plant and paper, production and binding estimates based on design specifications. Selects typesetters and book and component printers from among preferred vendors. b. Issues purchase orders for composition, printing, and binding, using the Press central database software. c. Establishes and maintains schedules for delivery of final text and jacket PDFs to the printer, and for delivery of bound books. Ensures that correct application and PDF files are archived and converted to e-books. d. Tracks all stages of text and art files and proofs through editorial and design. e. Is the primary contact with outside vendors on all jobs, maintains close contact on job progress, and monitors vendor performance for quality, costs, and schedule. f. Provides regular information on job progress and delivery to editors, designers, and management by updating the Press database. 7. Tracks shipments of goods into the warehouse, approves and processes invoices and verifies receipt of goods. 8. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skill/ability 1: Thorough knowledge of book production technology and standards for typesetting, offset and digital book manufacturing, component printing, and ebook production.
Required Skill/ability 2: Excellent organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail under deadline pressure. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Required Skill/ability 3: Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, ftp clients, inventory and database systems, and archiving systems, as well as excellent file management skills. Strong budget-planning and mathematical skills.
Required Skill/ability 4: Ability to lead a team, to build strong customer relationships, and to balance diplomatically the often conflicting demands of stakeholders in the production process. Experience leading projects or managing staff, vendors, or freelancers.
