Detailed Job Description People:
Manage a fulltime team of 2 - 5+ employees, with responsibility for hiring, training, performance reviews, employee development, disciplinary action and documentation, up to and including possible termination situations. Approve requests for time off, review and approve timecards. Ensure employees are aware of and following all departmental, university and state and federal rules and regulations.
Provide recognition to employees. Allow employees the opportunity to learn or take on new roles or responsibilities, while maintaining the standards required for their core functions. Cross-train and build a cohesive team within assigned areas of responsibility, while always retaining the view that everyone is part of the greater HUB, and by extension, RIT, team
Process:
The Production Manager has overall responsibility for printing operations (offset, digital, wide format), bindery and finishing, customer service and order entry.
Collaboration and cooperation with mail services team is critical to the HUB's success. The majority of our work involves printing, bindery and mail; we work as one, supporting and assisting each other throughout the process from order entry through delivery to end user.
Experience with and understanding of color management; will be able to continue to achieve RIT HUB's G7 Qualification in Color Space.
Responsible for managing budgets, maintaining equipment, projecting trends in the printing industry to keep the HUB on the leading edge of innovation and trending demands in the printing industry.
Provides strategic input regarding equipment needs, software needs, and other opportunities for improvement and growth of the HUB.
Builds and maintains vendor relationships, especially relating to raw materials (such as paper, wide format substrates) and equipment service providers.
Works with trade bindery, printing, sign and other resources for those times when a job or part of a job must be outsourced.
General:
Financial reviews monthly.
Prepare purchase order requests.
Work with Procurement team and with Financial Analyst.
Insure work orders are complete and chargeback/payment information is accurate, including budget line for revenue recognition and that the proper sales tax percentage is used when applicable.
Keep up with industry trends and changes.
Make recommendations for product/service offerings expansions, or new lines of products/services.
Make recommendations for new equipment, replacement equipment or when to discontinue a product or service that is no longer viable.
Delegate tasks and projects as appropriate to immediate staff to balance workload and insure customer needs are met.
Work with the HUB Print email, on-line ordering system to insure we are expanding offerings, meeting customer needs and desires and are capturing business that may have gone to an outside competitor in the past.
Department/College Description The HUB is an integral part of the Division of Finance and Administration. The HUB has grown in scope, and the offerings are well beyond those seen in a typical in-plant or even a commercial print shop. We have a broad range of services, including traditional offset printing, state of the art digital and ink jet printing, full bindery services. We are expanding into wide format flat bed printing and cutting with an installation of new equipment in the next months. We have a very robust promotional goods line, which includes garment printing, sourcing swag items and managing on-line sites dedicated to promotional goods. We process mailing that exceed 100K pieces in-house, and provide kitting and fulfillment services to our customers.We are fortunate to enjoy strong support from the highest levels of RIT. Minimum Qualifications Education/Experienc:
Bachelors degree or equivalent experience
10 years of experience in a print production operation in a supervisory position.
Skills:
7+ years of experience with direct responsibility for managing print production staff (printing, bindery, other associated production)
Prior experience operating or maintaining printing equipment, with knowledge and understanding of offset printing, digital printing
Prior experience working with bindery equipment and processes
Experience working within an MIS, implementing or maintaining MIS is a plus
Understanding of the principles of color management is essential; color management SME
