NYU Shanghai is currently inviting applications for a full-time contract faculty position to join its program in Interactive Media Arts (IMA), an undergraduate liberal arts program in the practice and theory of interactive media.
IMA combines practice-based work with critical scholarship in the exploration of the social, cultural and aesthetic fundamentals of emerging media. With computation at its core, our curriculum includes but is not limited to creative programming, digital media creation (animation, VR/AR, and time-based media), physical computing and digital fabrication. Our seminars cover the theory, history and semiotics of emerging media, to create a measured balance to the applied component of the program.
This is an open rank Full-Time Continuing Contract Faculty (FTCC) position. Candidates must have completed a terminal degree by the time of appointment in September 2024. Typical appointments are on 3 year terms, with expected teaching loads of 4 courses per academic year. While we seek applications from candidates with an active research profile, successful candidates will be hired on the basis of teaching and service.
Faculty teach two courses per semester, one foundation course and one elective. Electives may be a production class or a seminar. In addition, faculty will advise students and participate in departmental and school-wide committees. Ongoing professional work is highly encouraged. Teaching experience, a commitment to undergraduate education, and enthusiastic dedication to this rapidly growing and evolving program are essential.
The core curriculum requirements of IMA majors are foundation courses (Required What is New Media and choosing two from: Interaction Lab, Communications Lab, and Creative Coding Lab) and a year-long Senior Capstone Studio.
Elective courses have included: Data: Code it Make it, Digital Heritage, Emerging Technologies and Computational Arts, Immersive Design for Video Games, Introduction to 3D, Machine Learning for Artists and Designers, Nature Acoustics, Realtime Audiovisual Performance Systems, Urban Farming: Technology and Community, Web Page to Web Space, Wising up to the Smart City.
Terms of employment at NYU Shanghai are comparable to NYU New York and other U.S. institutions.
We seek candidates who have a terminal degree (MFA, MPS, or PhD) as well as a minimum of two years full-time teaching or equivalent professional experience. Candidates should also have an established record of creative practice with publicly exhibited work in related fields and/or have published work in a discipline related to the theory and practice of emerging media.
We seek candidates whose work intersects with the curriculum and research interests of IMA. This includes, but is not limited to:

Candidates are expected to submit a letter of application, illustrative publications or documentation of creative work, a curriculum vitae, and the names of two referees who have agreed to submit reference letters upon request.
Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For best consideration, materials should be submitted by no later than December 1, 2023.
