The George Mason University Office of the Dean, within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), seeks a proactive, organized, and self-reliant Senior Financial Analyst. About the Department:
The purpose of the Dean's Office is to oversee all educational, research, development, and administrative activities within the College of Engineering and Computing. The Dean's Office provides direction and structure and works with the Associate and Assistant Deans, Department Chairs, and Center Directors. The office also works closely with other University departments and offices to include the Offices of the President and Provost.
The Chief Business Officer team within the CEC Office of the Dean, facilitates the planning and implementation of the unit's financial and operational vision as it relates to the full range of business functions and activities for the college to include finance, research administration, human resources, operations, and information technology. The CBO is accountable for and provides overall leadership, supervision, management, and coordination of these functions, as well as provides oversight for the development of implementation of policies and procedures to achieve desired outcomes. The CBO team maintains relationships with central administration and other University departments, as well as other units' CBO teams, to facilitate these outcomes.
The College of Engineering and Computing has experienced rapid growth over the past five years with students increasing from 7,800 to over 10,800 and full time faculty and staff growing from 250 to 400. This position is responsible for annual budget development, quarterly forecasts, monthly financial reporting, and a variety of financial analysis. These duties are performed through partnership with College Senior Leaders, Department Chairs, and other members of the CBO Finance team.

This position is responsible for annual budget development, quarterly forecasts, monthly financial reporting, and a variety of financial analysis. These duties are performed through partnership with College Senior Leaders, Department Chairs, and other members of the CBO Finance team.
Responsibilities:
Budget Development:
Sr. Financial Analyst is responsible for development of annual budgets for departments and administrative teams assigned to them.
- Partners with department chairs and administrative team leads on their budgetary requirements for faculty, staff, adjuncts, GTAs, wage positions, and direct expenditures;
- Develops staffing plan and associated metrics to support decision making on requested full time positions (faculty and staff);
- Submits complete budgetary request for consolidation and presentation to CBO;
- Enters approved budgets into budget systems or spreadsheet for submission to Office of Strategic Budget and Planning;
- Presents approved budget to department chairs and administrative team leads after submission; and
- Assists CBO in development of multi-year budgets for the College;
Financial Reporting, Analysis, and Modeling:
Sr. Financial Analyst provides financial reporting that communicates the financial results of departments and administrative teams along with necessary analysis to identify issues or concerns, as well as assist to ensure financial targets are met.
- Assists financial analysts in generation of monthly financial reports;
- Conducts performance analysis to determine drivers of variances to budget and other financial targets;
- Communicates results of the analysis with department chairs and administrative team leaders;
- Identifies any financial transactions required to correct monthly financial results and communicates those transactions to financial analyst for processing quarterly report startup activity and balances to faculty; and
- Generates year-end financial reports and analysis of how the department or administration team ended the fiscal year.
Forecasting:
Sr. Financial Analyst is responsible for development of quarterly and semester forecasts of expense and revenues for departments and administrative teams assigned to them.
- Forecasts total fiscal year credit hours and direct revenues each semester;
- Forecasts annual personnel and direct expenses on quarterly basis;
- Completes forecast report and identifies any budgetary gaps that need to be addressed;
- Meets with department chairs and administrative team leaders to review forecasted financial results and partner with them to develop plan to address any overruns; and
- Forecasts anticipated startup spending for faculty to assist with overall forecast for reserve spending.
CEC Financial Report SME:
Sr. Financial Analyst is responsible for development of standard financial reports, serves as Microstrategy Librarian, and creates a report repository for historical reports that are accessible to CEC senior leaders. Also takes lead on creation of new reports needed to support financial analyses.
Required Qualifications:
- Knowledge of fiscal policies and procedures;
- Effective written and verbal communication skills;
- Demonstrated organizational and financial skills;
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population;
- Ability to manage multiple projects within a fast-paced environment;
- Experience with development of annual budgets and quarterly forecasts for complex organizations;
- Experience with producing monthly financial reports and providing analysis of the financial results they contain;
- Extensive experience conducting ad hoc financial analysis and working with large amounts of data; and
- Experience working with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) with ability to learn new software and systems as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree; or a combination of education and experience;
- Knowledge of University fiscal policies and procedures; and
- Experience with Banner and MicroStrategy.
Please note this is not a 100% remote/virtual position, but it is telework friendly. Depending upon your department/office, you may have the ability to telework 1-2 days per week.
