Job Summary: The IT Technical Specialist V performs advanced IT activities for specialized, complex and/or functional areas requiring the expert knowledge and professional application of IT principles, practices and techniques in accordance with industry standards and university policy. Requires a great amount of evaluation, originality or ingenuity. May be responsible for training, assisting or supervising lower level IT personnel and other staff. May lead projects and cross-functional activities.

Additional Department Summary: This position will serve as the technical lead for UA OIT’s Geographic Information Systems (GIS) under general supervision of the OIT leadership team. The GIS Programmer/Analyst will be responsible for collecting user requirements and designing, writing, testing, deploying, and documenting custom GIS software applications. The GIS Programmer/Analyst will communicate and collaborate effectively with a broad spectrum of groups, including but not limited to researchers, research institutes, Public Safety, UAPD, Land Management, and public agencies in surrounding communities. This position may be eligible for remote work.

Required Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree and three (3) years of IT experience; OR Bachelor's degree and five (5) years of IT experience; OR Associate’s degree and seven (7) years of IT experience; OR High School Diploma or GED and nine (9) years of IT experience. Knowledge of advanced programming, networking, system, multimedia, instructional or security technology skills or knowledge of project management methods and applications. May require advanced level training or certification.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Experience with ESRI ARCGIS or GIS Software, and web development languages.

Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Skills and Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of GIS concepts and analytical techniques, including geospatial data creation, conversion, manipulation, and analysis. Ability to analyze complex problems, evaluate alternatives, and make sound independent decisions within established guidelines. Ability to plan, organize, and execute GIS-related tasks efficiently and effectively while meeting customer requirements. Ability to strategically plan and help customers realize their vision. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Knowledge of geodatabase administration principles and demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise geodatabases. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community are required.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with an RDBMS such as Postgres, SQL Server, or Oracle. Experience with geospatial extensions to the above RDBMS is a strong plus.
