Job Summary
The Department of Social and Behavioral Science is seeking an Assistant Director of Research Operations to support mixed methods research and complex administrative activities of a senior faculty PI with a large and complex research portfolio.
Position Description
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Strategic contributions
Strategic partner to PI
Support strategic planning process and implementation
Support PI in thought leadership and broad high-level management support
Align research resources and programming with goals and objectives
Work with PI on setting priorities and fostering partnerships across the University and beyond
Operations
Oversee all aspects of logistics and programmatic development
Develop overall timeline for PI programs of research, coordinating efforts of staff, faculty, and fellows, and working reciprocally with external partners
Develop strong working relationships with faculty, fellows, and external partners
Serve as key liaison between research initiatives and Harvard Chan, the Harvard Community, and audiences beyond the University
Facilitate communication and collaboration with research personnel within and across institutions, most notably with investigators and staff at Massachusetts General Hospital, Dana Farber Cancer Center, Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers, and community partners throughout the state of Massachusetts
Coordinate execution and management of service agreements, data use agreements, budgets, and invoicing with community health centers and other partners
Oversee management of website
Manage publication repository and review processes
Support PI in working with grants management to manage program of research spending to align with research personnel effort across projects, prepare budgets and budget justifications, and prioritize future spending
Human Resources
Staff recruitment, hiring, managing, evaluating, and mentoring program staff in collaboration with PIs
Promote the professional development of new and more junior staff
Train and oversee other research staff supporting qualitative data collection and analysis
Research initiatives
Work closely with PI to oversee and develop research initiatives
Work to ensure research portfolios comply with funder reporting requirements
Serve in a liaison capacity working directly with funders, such as sitting on national working groups
Assist PI in developing grant proposals
Manage pilot grant awards applications process including review and selection process, initiation of awards, and monitoring of grant progress and deliverables in collaboration with sponsored research staff
Lead organization and management of Community Engagement Studios
Coordinate, conduct, and oversee research tasks and projects, making use of interviews, observations, and surveys based on project needs
Lead summarization and analysis of qualitative data using NVivo software, Excel spreadsheets, and Word processing applications
Serve as the primary resource, and provides training on, qualitative analysis
Oversee a complex qualitative database, cross-institute file storage, and project management software
In collaboration with staff and scientists, participate in protocol and measure development
Draft research papers, tools, progress reports, and articles for publication and presentation with both academic and community facing audiences
Present research findings to internal and external audiences
Lead meeting and conference planning and coordination
Oversee administrative and regulatory requirements for pilot studies and other Center activities including local IRB, SMART IRB and reliance agreements, data safety applications, eRA Commons human subjects documentation, progress reporting, and NIH Clinical Trials registration and reporting in collaboration with sponsored research staff
The Senior Research Project Manager will also perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
Experience Requirements (i.e. – years of experience, supervisory experience, etc.)
5+ years of experience in public health research required
Technical Skills/Hard Skill Requirements (i.e. – experience with MS Excel, particular lab techniques, particular software, etc.)
Experience with qualitative (e.g., NVivo) and quanitative (e.g., MS Excel, REDCap) research software required
PLEASE NOTE: This position has a strong internal candidate in mind. This position also has a term appointment of August 31, 2024 with the possibility of extension.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a hybrid position and this position will be based in Boston, MA. Additional detail pertaining to this position will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, California (exempt staff only), Georgia, Illinois, New Jersey, Virginia, and Washington).
Additional Qualifications and Skills
The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:
Develop presentations, track activities, assess performance of various programmatic activities
Knowledge of applicable research methods, as well as experience using NVivo software independently, strongly preferred
Experience conducting qualitative and mixed methods research
Knowledge and application of implementation science theories, measures, and methods
Experience managing research administration systems including IRB and those specific to NIH grants such as eRA Commons, ASSIST, and Clinical Trials registration and reporting
Listening, communication, writing, presentation, and problem-solving skill
Strong writing skills with close attention to detail
Strong project management experience with capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously
Effectively collaborate and communicate with a broad range of potential partners and audiences
Take initiative regarding projects management and to identify opportunities for future growth
