The University of Michigan Facilities and Operations Information Services Department is seeking a GIS Technician Senior to join the Facilities and Operations Information Services team to create, update, maintain and analyze various datasets using ESRI ArcGIS Pro, FME, and other software programs.
- Compile geographic data and attributes from a variety of sources including blueprints, field observation, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and existing maps
- Create maps, utility networks, and web services using GIS software and related equipment
- Gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data from staff and determine how best the information can be displayed using GIS
- Meet with users to define data needs, project requirements, required outputs, or to develop applications
- Analyze spatial data for geographic statistics to incorporate into documents and reports
- Design and update database, applying additional knowledge of spatial feature presentations
- Create Tasks, Arcade, and Notebook scripts
- Enter new map data through the use of a digitizer or by direct input of coordinate information using the principles of cartography including coordinate systems, longitude, latitude, elevation, topography, and map scales
- Analyze geographic relationships among varying types of data
- Prepare metadata and other documentation
- Move, copy, delete, and add files, drawings, and maps to output reports in hard copy or electronic transfer
- Present information to users and answer questions
- Retrieve and print stored maps
- Conduct research to locate and obtain existing data
- Maintain and comply with established internal controls
This position may work with and/or support systems that maintain or process sensitive institutional data as defined by university policy. Successful candidates must comply with federal, state, and local law, and/or university policies or agreements that require the university to implement specific privacy and security safeguards, including but not limited to ITAR, EAR, HIPAA, and FISMA
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field or formal education in GIS preferred; degree in geography, natural resources, Computer Science or related field; equivalent combination of education and experience or extensive professional experience as an advanced GIS user will also be considered
- At least 3 years working with ESRI GIS systems
- At least 3 years of working experience with GIS standards and applications, ArcGIS Pro, Portal, SDE Enterprise
- Working knowledge of basic mapping and cartographic/GIS concepts; mathematical concepts, research methods, database design principles, basic graphic arts principles; customer service principles
- At least 3 years working with FME and python in a GIS environment
- Familiarity with Field Maps, Experience Builder, LiDAR manipulation, ArcGIS Indoors, and ArcScene
- Experience with ESRI Utility Networks, Geometric Networks
- Ability to prioritize and organize, works well under stress, and meet deadlines
- Ability to be flexible and adapt to change
- Strong interpersonal skills to assist and communicate with staff
- Must be able to perform field work, including climbing stairs, ladders, and rough terrain
- High degree of computer literacy; strong proficiency in MS Windows and Google applications
- Experience developing web-based GIS maps
- Working knowledge of Tasks, Arcade, and ArcGIS Notebooks
- Familiarity with databases for storing data, running queries, and creating reports
- Working knowledge of utility systems and experience mapping them
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
Salary will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
