Reserving
Manage, coordinate, and collaborate to complete regular reserve studies and make recommendations to management for booking reserves. Regularly meet with claims personnel to understand reserve practices, trends and identify emerging issues. Deliver key insights such as indicated carried reserve, reserve ranges, deficiencies/redundancies, frequency, and severity trends, etc. Mentor actuarial analysts in developing competencies in reserving.
Rates
Manage, coordinate, and collaborate to complete rate level indications, analysis of market conditions and competitor rate analysis, impact analysis of proposed rate and underwriting changes and class ratemaking.
Make recommendations to management relative to annual rate changes.
Analyze NCCI loss cost filings and other filings.
Develop and oversee creation of comprehensive actuarial exhibits and the actuarial memorandum in support of rate filings.
Collaborate with compliance, data science, and underwriting to complete rate filings.
Respond to inquiries from the Department of Insurance as needed.
Financial Models
Design, manage, and collaborate in the development and maintenance of financial models. Provide actuarial support for completion of financial statements and future financial projections. Provide insights and inputs related to trends and assumptions.
Reinsurance
Oversees analysis of reinsurance programs including but not limited to: analysis of large losses, reviews and optimization of reinsurance structure, reviews of broker actuarial loss pick analysis for pricing and review of reinsurance submission. Collaborate with reinsurance broker and underwriting to complete catastrophe modeling, understand and manage catastrophe exposures.
Managing Engagements
Manage engagements with consulting actuaries and other external consultants to supply information for and understand and operationalize results of special studies, actuarial reviews, predictive analytics, etc. Provide insights to management regarding such engagements.
Subject Matter Expertise
Participate as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on corporate and department projects as assigned. Work to build trust and influence on leveraged expertise. Train and mentor peers on project work product.
Actuarial Consultation
Prepare and present written and verbal reports and presentation to key stakeholders, distilling complex information into easy-to-understand business language
Provide training, mentoring and guidance to new team members on policies and procedures within the parameters of the team and unit responsibilities.
Provide full actuarial support for any M&A projects, as needed.
Manage and provide actuarial support for new products and geographies ensuring compliance with state statutes and regulations.
Collaborate with sales and underwriting to develop actuarial tools and insights needed to properly place and price risks.
Data Modeling & Analytics
Model and make recommendations regarding dividends.
Design, manage, and collaborate in the development and maintenance of financial models. Provide actuarial support for completion of financial statements and future financial projections. Provide insights and inputs related to trends and assumptions.
Identify, design, and develop analytics studies utilizing advanced analytics for innovative solutions working closely with business units and analytics personnel.
Create concise, complete, and accurate project plans for analytics research, models and projects including descriptions of research objectives, methodologies, and data.
Manage analytics projects and engagements, consulting and collaborating with other disciplines to identify business objectives/decisions and designing studies and research around such topics. Design and develop models to analyze complex data sets to address these business problems and to inform business decision making. Deliver context, insights, assumption and understanding through effective written reports, emails, and presentations, using data visualization and story-telling principals.
Apply scientific method to study business problems. Develop hypotheses, design experiments and test feasibility of proposed actions to determine probable outcomes using a variety of tools and technologies.
Mine large data sets to identify insights and patterns using predictive and prescriptive analytics and machine learning techniques.
Conduct intermediate and advanced statistical analysis such as linear regression, ANOVA, time-series analysis, classification models, neural networks, decisions trees, as well as analysis of unstructured data (e.g., social media, digital footprint, speech analytics)
Apply advanced knowledge of statistics, machine learning, programming, data modeling, simulation, and advanced mathematics to recognize patterns, identify opportunities, pose business questions, and make valuable discoveries to address a variety of business challenges. Effectively communicate these insights and finding.
Perform technical and peer reviews
Collaborate, mentor and train others relative to analytics. Provide technical expertise relative to actuarial science, advanced mathematics and statistics, including modeling. Share analytics knowledge and skills to advance the understand and expertise of others.
Research advanced analytics and actuarial techniques. Identify critical and emerging technologies and methodologies that will support and extend the Company’s quantitative analytics capabilities.
Identify and recommend process improvements, analytics research/methods/models, data sources, technology solutions, etc. to improve efficiency, effectiveness and for advancing the analytics maturity of MEM.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Corporate Actuary.
