Position Details:
The WSU Extension Cereal Variety Testing Program is a keystone Extension program within the WSU System that disseminates science based, unbiased data on wheat and barley variety performance to dryland growers throughout Eastern Washington. The program operates out of Pullman, WA and conducts 42 trial sites across 13 counties and works closely with other programs within WSU, USDA-ARS, and other land-grant universities in the inland PNW to generate additional agronomic and disease resistance ratings for varieties. The program is looking for a highly motived individual to serve in a technical role and assist the lead technician in managing these trials to produce timely, reliable data for stakeholders.
Summary of Duties:
The Research Intern position is responsible to perform a variety of assignments in applied agricultural research in the field and laboratory, including operating a variety of light and medium farm equipment; and supervise and train lower seasonal laborers/farm workers/student workers, hauling plot equipment to trial sites, managing databases and performing data analyses.
Experiments and Variety Testing | 75%
Responsible for execution of scientific field-based experiments related to variety testing and other applied agronomic trials. Identify novel techniques and procedures to meet research objectives.
Establish, maintain, and harvest crop research plots applying techniques and methods outlined by the supervising scientist. Supervise undergraduate students in data collection. Operates and maintains a range of equipment used for field research including tractors, plot and row seeders, sprayers, combines, and threshers. Prepares seed samples for planting. Evaluates crop field plots for a range of developmental and agronomic traits including emergence, plant height, and days to heading.
Data Analysis | 15%
Computes, compiles, and summarizes data involving several variables; edits and prepares data for analysis by computer programs; prepares final data summaries for analysis by scientist.

Purchasing necessary field and laboratory supplies
Other | 5%
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.
Must have, or able to obtain a 1) Pesticide Applicators License, 2) FAA Part 107 Certification (to operate UAV) before or shortly after time of hire.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Ability to collaborate with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least one year of experience working in an applied research program.
Experimental and analytical skills;
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to coordinate and facilitate project work activities in a timely and efficient manner; operate a personal computer with MS office and Agrobase/Genovix skills; operate, maintain and repair field research equipment.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.

This temporary position is set to end one (1) year from start date. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment.
