The Student Affairs division of the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH) is seeking an Associate Director of Communications (Communications Associate) to support its internal student communication priorities. The BSPH Student Affairs team is committed to helping all Bloomberg School students access the tools, resources, and support they need to make the most of opportunities at the School, engage fully in the School community, and reach their academic and professional goals.
This role will jointly report to the Directors of Career Services and Student Life, supporting all communications initiatives for internal audiences including the development and implementation of communications strategies through a variety of digital and print channels, crafting messaging and collateral primarily for students and staff, and management of program communications content and marketing.
The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker, highly creative and collaborative, with considerable skills in message and content development, a solid sense for design—including implementing an institutional brand—and demonstrated experience producing high-quality, engaging, and effective communications efforts.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Manage the successful execution of internal communications and program information to incoming and current students for the Offices of Student Life and Career Services from conceptualization to completion, ensuring the quality, timeliness, and effectiveness of all components.
Plan and produce engaging and informative written, visual, and multimedia content in support of student communications objectives. Assist in the development and maintenance of an editorial calendar Create social media engagement strategy, including future management of any developed channels for internal communication to incoming and current students; identify opportunities for collaboration with other offices/departments and provide guidance in the application of university guidelines.
Assist with the development and execution of creative, new social media campaigns and write social media communications to promote programs, services, and resources.
Assist in the maintenance of website and intranet content with a focus on quality assurance, accessibility compliance, and search engine optimization.
Compile and proofread communications and informational materials including the weekly highlights email, event advertisements, and handouts, and create infographics.
Participate in the planning, development, management, and distribution of targeted email communications; manage audience distribution lists.
Oversee the development, creation, and maintenance of all new student orientation communications materials via Slate, Hopkins Groups (Campus Groups), and email.
Advise and support the BSPH Student Assembly VP of Communications.
Develop student text message communications strategy and manage the operations of the conversational text messaging tool, Moongoose Cadence.
Conceptualize and create student-focused content for the BSPH campus, including physical and digital signage around campus, in coordination with the Office of External Affairs.
Continually measure and review the performance of communications efforts; report on key metrics and trends, making adjustments where necessary.
Serve as an in-house resource, advising colleagues on communications best practices, university guidelines, and brand standards.
Coordinate with designers, photographers, printers, and other vendors as needed.
Continually stay abreast of emerging platforms, technologies, and trends. Identify new opportunities to engage with audiences.
Supervise up to one federal work-study student.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related field.
Four years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
A minimum of four years experience in communications, marketing or a related field; experience in a higher education and/or public health setting preferred. Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to write clear, concise copy for digital and print materials; strong editing and proofreading skills.
Solid understanding of principles of design; demonstrated experience working within established brand standards.
Extensive knowledge of and fluency within social media platforms.
Experience using content management systems (e.g. Drupal) and email marketing platforms; familiarity with HTML/CSS.
Understanding of measurement tools (e.g. Google Analytics) and how to translate data insights into action.
Superior attention to detail; ability to think creatively, strategically, and analytically.
Excellent interpersonal skills, cultural responsiveness, and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple groups, including students, staff, and administrators.
Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving, time management, and project management skills.
Ability to work effectively under deadlines and simultaneously juggle several assignments.
Technical qualifications or specialized certifications:
Proficient with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Canva, etc.) and related tools.
Familiar with web accessibility standards as well as best practices for usability, content styling and presentation, and search engine optimization.
Familiar with social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, etc.
Skills in graphic design, photography, or videography preferred.
Supervisory responsibility (indicate the number and type of persons supervised by the incumbent): Up to one federal student work-study student.
