Overview
The Senior Research Network Engineer plays a critical role in designing, implementing, managing, and monitoring the dedicated High Speed Research Network (HSRN) and supports the HSRN and the High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure. The HSRN and HPC are components of NYUs research computing infrastructure which includes new state-of-the-art HPC clusters, an investment to research cloud, Secure Research Data Environments and a dedicated Research Network. Develop and optimize network solutions, improve network performance, security and scalability of the HSRN in order to enhance the capabilities of Research Technologys program that includes Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing, HPC, and Immersive resources and service portfolios. Work to extend the HSRN in NYU research sites and to enhance the external network connectivity, in order to enable researchers to fully utilize the HSRN and HPC resources. Develop tools and processes that can be scaled and shared by IT and NYU faculty researchers, furthering investment in critical research partnerships and research projects. Partner closely with NYU IT network infrastructure team to align the operation and configuration of the HSRN with IT's network portfolio, policies, and standards, and best practices. Duties will include, but not be limited to, capacity planning, monitoring of network reliability and performance, as well as to provide problem resolution for network components which support the university's research units.
Responsibilities
Required Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or related field or equivalent
Preferred Education: Master's Degree in Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, or related field or equivalent.
Required Experience: 5+ years of enterprise network experience, with intermediate to advanced knowledge of designing, configuring and operating an enterprise-level TCP/IP network using OSPF/BGP a must. Management of switches, routers, network security devices, load balancers and network services (DHCP/DNS/IPAM) is required. Experience with HPC networks (Infiniband). Experience with network management and monitoring systems (such as Zenoss/Solarwinds/Nagios/Thousand Eyes, etc.) as well as log management tools (Splunk/Loggly/Elastic). Intermediate understanding of DNS and DHCP. Experience and basic understanding of administering Linux based systems. Experience in supporting a multi-site global campus WAN using DMVPN over public and private connectivity. Advanced network configuration and troubleshooting experience in a large (10,000+ node) campus environment.
Preferred Experience: 5+ years of experience with WDM systems such as Infinera. 7+ years of work experience as a network engineer in an academic or research setting. Must be well versed in quality data collection to ensure adequacy, accuracy and legitimacy of data and be able to strictly follow data privacy and security procedures for data handling and analysis to ensure adherence to legal and institutional standards. A record of successes in programming, architecting and deploying systems that are used or have produced concrete results. 5+ years of experience in a consulting, collaborative, or service-like role with researchers or clients. Experience with managing, administering and migrating software platforms in a Hybrid environment. 5+ years of experience should include programming, analytical, communication and managerial skills.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Advanced BGP and OSPF configurations, as well as traffic engineering. Deep understanding of the OSI model and how each layer applies. Excellent interpersonal communication, presentation and written and verbal communication skills, including documentation and customer support. Programming Arista, and Infinera network Equipment.
Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Understanding of physical network mediums and participation involving design and build out of cabling plants for facilities is desired. An understanding of project management and the ability to create network level diagrams and documentation is desired. Excellent understanding of desktops, networks, hardware, and cloud platforms. Proven ability to adapt to changing technologies, new applications, and dynamic environments. Desire and ability to write content on relevant technical subjects as needed. Excellent organizational, project management and technical leadership skills, and the ability to manage complex, large-scale research projects. Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
Qualifications
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is USD $120,000.00 to USD $140,000.00. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as, market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. This pay range represents base pay only and excludes any additional items such as incentives, bonuses, clinical compensation, or other items.
