General Description

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University seeks an experienced mechanical engineer to lead our undergraduate senior design program. We are looking for an engineer with several years of applied experience designing and manufacturing mechanical systems. Project management experience is a plus.

The candidate selected for this position will be the primary instructor for the Department's two-semester capstone senior design course. The goal of the course is to provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge, acquired during their first three years of course work, to solve real-world practical problems. Students work in small teams designing, building, and testing new medical devices, industrial equipment, prototypes for aerospace exploration, and community outreach projects. Recent sponsors include Stanley Black & Decker, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, Oceaneering Inc., CraniUS Inc., and the Army Research Laboratory. This position offers a breadth of opportunities from teaching and mentoring to maintaining prototyping equipment and facilities to sourcing projects from external partners.

Major responsibilities of the position include:

• Managing and advising multiple small teams of engineering students on their projects.
• Creating learning experiences and curriculum that support students in the engineering design process.
• Developing and growing relationships with industrial, governmental, and clinical project sponsors and partners.
• Securing and preparing new design projects for the students prior to the start of each academic year.
• Maintaining the course manufacturing and prototyping equipment and facilities and ensuring that all students are properly trained to use them safely.

This is a career-oriented, non-tenure line appointment with a clear teaching-line promotional pathway for applicants eager to work in an innovative environment. In addition, the University will be opening a new multidisciplinary design center within the next five years, and this facility will greatly enhance the way engineering design is taught at Johns Hopkins. The candidate chosen for this position will be encouraged to develop their own unique vision for how mechanical engineering students and faculty can fully leverage this fantastic new facility.

Qualifications

We seek an engineer with a bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with traditional and modern manufacturing techniques and at least 5 years of experience related to the design and fabrication of mechanical and electromechanical systems, including experience outside of academia, is required. Additionally, we seek someone with demonstrated excellence in mentoring and project management.
