Under the general supervision of the Baskin Engineering Lab Support (BELS) Manager, the Experiential Learning Facility (ELF) manager will be responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Baskin Engineering creative/maker space. This position is responsible for managing the operations of the creative maker space and creating a safe and welcoming environment for students engaging in experiential learning and project work within the space. The ELF manager will ensure proper use of tools and equipment to minimize risk to lab participants. The ELF manager will support the programmatic uses of the creative/maker space developed by faculty, staff, and students via the purchase of equipment and supplies, and reconfiguration of spaces as needed. The ELF manager will manage, direct and train student workers who provide oversight of activities in the lab.
The Experiential Learning Facility is a ~5,750 asf creative and maker space located in a series of rooms in the basement of the Jack Baskin Engineering building on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus. A former machine shop, the ELF supports working with metals, fiberglass, plastics, fabric and electronics. Tools and equipment include CNC mills, sheet metal bending and cutting, arc welding, laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC routers, traditional drill presses, traditional metal mills, overhead tracked cranes, miter saws, hand tools (drills, sawzall), grinders, soldering irons, signal generators, oscilloscopes. A separate dedicated room supports spray painting. ELF rooms are well equipped with 110 and 220 volt power circuits, air handling, pneumatic air, and water/sinks. Support for wood fabrication is envisioned but not currently supported.
Budgeted Salary: $91,850 - $107,800/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary above the posted range. 40% - LAB OPERATIONS
The ELF manager will be on site and have the primary responsibility for day-to-day operations of the ELF. Responsible for;
Inspecting the facility, maintaining and repairing equipment, ordering equipment and consumables, coordinating with vendors to repair equipment, and ensuring that students properly clean, store / dispose of materials after use and maintain the facility.
Interface with Baskin Engineering Lab Support (BELS) staff as needed to ensure smooth operation of the ELF, including participation in regular BELS touch base meetings. Interface with UCSC Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) as needed to ensure compliance with governmental and university regulations concerning the safe operation of labs, and the safe storage, use, and disposal of chemicals and materials. Interface with Baskin Engineering and UCSC Facilities as needed to ensure proper operation of the ELF and coordinate modifications to the ELF.
Oversee all procurement and maintenance contracts with external or internal vendors necessary for the operation of the ELF and for supplies needed for first year design courses and other workshops taking place in the ELF.
30% - RESEARCH PROJECTS & COLLABORATION
Interface with engineering clubs, student orgs or independent student project teams/user groups who have projects housed in the facility, including providing assistance and administration for spending funds and awards and management of access and logistics.
Facilitate meetings of students associated with clubs and working groups using the ELF, including quarterly meetings with major stakeholders/users to gather feedback on the operation of the ELF.
Coordinate with other Baskin Engineering staff who interface with student clubs and organizations, especially around travel to competitions.
Provides engineering services to ELF research projects, meets with student researchers to assist in the design and development of project.
Assists with project specifications and parameters.
Provides assistance and guidance on design, construction and assembly of student projects.
15% - SAFETY
Ensure safe usage of facilities and equipment including production, posting and enforcement of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Oversee all aspects of training and certification regimens, implement an access control system (potentially using third party digital key access software).
Create a culture of safety in the ELF, and develop courses using the Canvas learning management system, write flyers, and create and run workshops and other programs as needed to create and maintain this culture of safety.
Develop a management plan concerning the supervised use and hours of use for higher-risk/heavy equipment in the ELF, and actively perform this supervision.
Seek training for ELF equipment for which they are unfamiliar.
10% - STUDENT SUPERVISION
Train, hire and supervise student technicians (a.k.a. student helpers, 'super-users,' lab techs) and approve timesheets.
Provide leadership training and mentorship for student staff affiliated with the ELF in collaboration with Experiential Learning instructional staff.
5% - COMMUNICATION
Create and maintain website resources to provide awareness of the ELF. Coordinate with other facilities on campus and in the local community who offer comparable or complementary services.
Tracking and mapping resources offered at this and other facilities.
Develop training and certification approaches that work across similar on-campus facilities.
Archive and promote project visibility, activities and stakeholder network.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
Thorough knowledge necessary to apply principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Strong analytical skills to independently conduct analysis and develop appropriate recommendations.
Demonstrated decision-making skills.
Demonstrated organizational abilities to prioritize competing work assignments in order to meet deadlines and adherence to quality standards.
Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.
Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.
Understanding of academic research facility needs.
Experience in working with Windows and Mac operating systems.
Experience in managing a complex machine shop, wood shop, maker-space, or similar environment.
Thorough knowledge in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in research or teaching setting.
