The assistant director of communications — as a member of CMU's University Communications team — plays a key role in advancing the awareness and reputation of the university and the engagement of faculty, staff, current and future students, alumni and friends. This position reports to the director of communications. The assistant director is responsible for supporting the communications team in the execution of communication plans and strategy. The individual will collaborate with faculty, staff and students across the university to identify story leads and capture stories to be shared across a multitude of communications channels, such as our online news site, social media channels, internal communications and email news digest. The assistant director will be able to adapt to changing priorities and produce an excellent work product, especially written content, which connects both internal and external constituents to CMU's brand. This individual is a skilled and creative communicator who is passionate about being part of an organized, cohesive, creative, energetic and values-driven team that effectively balances daily tasks and high-impact projects. The position requires a self-starter who is creative, takes initiative and can shepherd a project independently from conception to execution.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism, public relations or a related communications field. Three years of experience related to the duties and responsibilities of this position. Excellent writing and editing skills. Proven experience using AP style. Demonstrated ability to creatively communicate across a variety of media. Ability to gather, interpret and understand complex information in order to produce content that engages and motivates target audiences. Understanding of and experience in social media management and strategy. Highly skilled in project management, working collaboratively with others, and working with a team to meet deadlines and deliverables. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with other writers and subject matter experts.
Preferred Qualifications
Understanding of higher education. Media relations experience. Issue/crisis management experience. Demonstrated ability to interface and build relationships to achieve strategic organizational goals.
Duties & Responsibilities
Identifies and develops creative and compelling stories from throughout the university. Writes and edits content for use across multiple communications platforms, including CMU's online newsroom, internal communications and social media. Identifies, researches, writes and pitches strategic stories to the press and other media, under the direction of the director of communications. Serves as point of contact for media inquiries, as necessary. Collaborates and works with a team of writers, marketers, designers, web experts and interns to brainstorm and deliver innovative communications. Communicates organizational initiatives and projects to employees and stakeholders, ensuring messages are consistent across all mediums. Responsible for implementation of social media strategy including content development, listening/community management and posting. Utilizes project management software to manage projects and tasks. Assists in monitoring and management of CMU's social media channels. Monitors the effectiveness of communications tactics through analytics and other measurement. Manages CMU's weekly e-newsletter, Our CMU — responsible for gathering and coordinating content, building e-newsletter and publishing.
