JOB TITLE: Shop Supervisor, Part-time
DEPARTMENT: School of Design
REPORTS TO: Program Director
Summary:
The University of the Arts School of Design is looking for a part-time shop supervisor to run its Product Design Shop and adjoining annex space on the 5th floor of Terra Hall. Our shop is a fully equipped maker space with both traditional and digital fabrication capabilities for undergraduate and graduate design students to build and physicalize projects. This is a flexible position that requires a total of 16 to 20 hours a week during weekdays between 10am and 10pm. We are looking for an engaging, creative, organized and responsible person who has professional experience in traditional and modern fabrication and can work with both faculty members and students on their project and class needs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide maintenance of all machines in the shop which include but are not limited to a table saw, band saw, chop saw, drill press, lathe, mill machine, CNC mill, laser cutter, and a variety of 3D printers.
- Train undergraduate, graduate, and work-study students to safely use the shop machines for all making needs.
- Supervise all students and faculty using tools and
- Keep tools, accessories, materials and the shop space organized and
- Work with the program directors and faculty to prepare for exhibitions, workshops and other events
- Assist all faculty members in the shop during demonstrations, studio time,
- List and manage all hand tools during shop hours and track all tools that have been checked out.

Education:
- Candidates should have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent in product design, industrial design, engineering design, sculpture or other related disciplines.
Experience:
- 1-3 years’ experience in product design fabrication and skilled in both traditional making such as woodwork and metal milling, as well as digital fabrication like CNC milling, laser cutting and 3D printing.
- Candidates who have experience in shop keeping, working in higher education or in a makerspace, and/or in fabrication related roles are preferred.

A moderate to high level of skill is required and must be demonstrated for the following:

- Teaching/instruction in the skills and safety protocols of using the tools listed
Supervisory Responsibility:
- The Part-time Product Design Shop Supervisor will be responsible for supervising all students, faculty and staff in the shop area and the Annex space outside the shop to keep all users safe while using tools and machines and ensuring tools and machines are used as intended given the particular circumstances.
