Departmental Overview
Social Science Matrix is a UC Berkeley institute for social science research. Our purpose is captured in our name: we provide an organizational framework, a 'matrix' that supports cross-disciplinary projects pursued by more than 500 social scientists across the Berkeley campus research landscape and beyond.
With Matrix as a catalyst, UC Berkeley social scientists have unique potential to generate effective solutions to global challenges like mobility, behavior change, social resilience, and governance.
Position:
Serve as the Associate Director of the newly formed Berkeley Economy and Society Initiative (BESI). BESI is an interdisciplinary center on political economy, addressing a wide range of global challenges, such as climate change, inequality, the governance of new technologies and the health of democracy. The center will support student training and faculty research and host a range of events from speakers to conferences, creating an active and diverse interdisciplinary forum for the development and exchange of ideas. The Associate Director will work with the Associate Director of Matrix and the Faculty Director of BESI to help promote and administer the Center's activities and programs along with affiliated faculty research grants.

Responsibilities
Leads efforts to conduct highly complex analyses across a broad spectrum of programs, policies and initiatives or provides in-depth, complex analyses as a specialist in Political Economy.
Identifies and interacts with faculty and students across campus researching various aspects of Political Economy.
Creates a network of contacts and research projects to identify research synergies across campus and create community.
Works on networking faculty and students that do research in our four thematic clusters: capitalism and democracy, environment and climate, technology, and inequality.
Stays informed of current research in various aspects of Political Economy and be able to speak at meetings about BESI's activities and provide context for BESI in the larger research community.
Develops and coordinates policy or program communications; works to curate and generate website content.
The initiative seeks to inform about research in a broad range of Political Economy topics across the Berkeley campus and specially to focus efforts funded by BESI.
Curates information about research projects and faculty and communicate out to the campus community, our funders and our collaborators.
It will be especially important to highlight the achievements of BESI and contextualize them with broader efforts in academia and society.
Write policy briefs, research summaries, project abstracts, etc.
Develops and advocates solutions to organizational or research program issues, including developing and administering new systems, policies, processes, or programs.
Works with faculty researchers to generate and administer extramural research grants.
Manages the four thematic clusters of BESI, developing administrative infrastructure for them to run well within the Berkeley administrative systems as well as minimizing burdens for BESI staff, affiliated faculty, students and researchers.
Collaborates with campus administrative units - such as SHARE Regional Services - to efficiently manage funds and research projects.
Will provide support for extramural funding - include input on research proposals and actionable plans for conducting research within the administrative framework of UC Berkeley.
Provides analyses for complex budget, funding, financial, or academic data, systems and resource projects working directly with internal and external constituents.
Works to expand BESI funding for research and activities with external funders and internal researchers.
Prepares accurate budgets with project administration goals in consideration.
Administers research activities.
Provides input about BESI budgets and funding to help fund activities that meet BESI goals and objectives.
Actively monitors and supports the four thematic clusters budgets including all their activities, which may include extramural funding.
Works with external funders and collaborators - including other research foundations and research institutes on collaborative projects and budgets.
Provides local area expertise for activities happening at Berkeley or the SF Bay Area region.
Proposes, leads and/or participates on policy, strategy and planning committees and working groups.
Identifies promising research topics and areas to devote resources.
Communicates to Director about common issues occurring amongst the four thematic clusters and provide ideas about how to solve problems and encourage efficiencies.
Develops proposals and recommendations to guide and support a broader strategic direction for the function, research initiative, program and/or organizational unit.
The Associate Director identifies funding opportunities and future research directions for BESI and work to expand BESI's portfolio of activities and research so BESI is well positioned as a thought leader in Political Economy.
Identifies ways to extend the funding longer than the initial project period.
Assist writing proposals for obtaining grants for new projects or activities.
May attend grantor meetings and draft/make presentations as needed.
Collaborates with partners to coordinate the development, implementation and monitoring of new programs and processes.
BESI, as a newly created initiative will need to develop new processes for all the new programming taking place.
The Associate Director will be responsible for coordinating with partners at Social Science Matrix, campus administrative units and our funders to make sure these new processes and programs work efficiently while also ensuring high quality research output.
Makes high level contacts of a sensitive nature, internally and externally, requiring discretion and diplomacy in order to negotiate with or persuade officials to adopt the proposed solution or program/process recommendations.
Collaborates with the leaders of our four thematic clusters as well as leaders amongst our collaborators and funders as well as within Social Science Matrix.
The relationships with our funders are especially sensitive and BESI will need to ensure that we are responsive to our funders goals and objectives in providing the initial seed funding for BESI.
Guides and directs planning which may include senior management, faculty, and/or external constituencies.
Many research projects and activities will be coordinated amongst our faculty, funders and collaborators.
We expect to have several major research conferences, workshops or institutes a year involving faculty from across the world, our funders, potential donors, collaborators from other research institutes as well as funding agencies.
Required Qualifications
Advanced knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
Advanced project management skills.
Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols and procedures.
Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques.
Advanced analytical/problem-solving skills.
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (Masters, PhD) in Political Economy related discipline (examples include Political Science, Sociology, Economics, Public Policy, Law, or Internal Affairs).
Salary & Benefits
This is a 1yr, full-time (40 hours/week), contract appointment, eligible for full UC benefits with the possibility of extension. This is a monthly paid, exempt position.
Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $82,400.00 - $110,000.00.
