The School of Art + Art History + Design has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of IT / Senior Computer Specialist (SCS).
Position Purpose Under general direction of the Director, provide computing support to faculty, staff and students in three locations in the areas of academic instruction, department administration, and research. The SCS will provide leadership and guidance on all department computing-related initiatives.
Position Complexities: The computing environment served by this position is complex among several areas including computer hardware and software specialized for differing missions of the three divisions, Art, Art History, and Design. The SCS will need a knowledge of current computing standards for each of these communities. The position serves a large number of clients and will need to be able to prioritize service to each of these populations appropriately. The position may require the SCS to work non-standard hours to implement new services or be on-call for emergency events.
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: The consistency, stability, and reliability of computing equipment, and application support is critical to the success of the administrative, research, and teaching mission of the School. The position is the primary point of contact for technical computing information, support, purchasing, and maintenance for over 60 faculty and staff and a student population of around 700.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES We are looking for someone with a solid IT background to provide a full spectrum of computer resources and services. This position offers a variety of responsibilities that include: technology management and coordination, educational support, training and user education, systems administration, technology design and planning, technical maintenance of internal websites, and lab and printing support. TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT AND SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION 60% Install, configure, and maintain desktop hardware and software, including operating systems, applications, communications and instructional software and peripherals, ensuring compatibility with central UW computing systems and standards, including a focus on systems security.
Provide detailed requirements analysis and recommendations for systems software and hardware acquisitions and/or upgrades. Update, repair, configure, backup, and perform routine maintenance of several servers (including a Windows Hyper-V server, other Windows servers, and Macintosh OSX servers)
Provide file and print, database, web, backup, computer MDM management (JAMF – including package distribution and system imaging), 3d Network Rendering (Keyshot), and specialized software license services. Plan, execute, and manage primarily internal web sites for the SoA+AH+D: Act as central point of contact and oversee and ensure functioning and security of sites. Requires working knowledge of web-based technology, however most sites are based on Wordpress implementations.
Ensure disaster recovery, data security, and web security for SoA+AH+D administrative systems and servers. Develop and maintain disaster recovery preparedness plans and technical recovery tools. And provide technical design, development, and maintenance of databases, custom data driven applications, and associated files for administrative departments within the School.
DESKTOP SUPPORT AND MANGEMENT OF LABS 30% Manage state-of-the-art computer centers which include workstations, multiple color print devices and plotters, postscript rip digital proofing systems, large equipment checkout center, and slide, flatbed, and film scanners. Provide backup support to students, faculty, and staff in the use of a large number of software applications, specialized graphic arts and design applications, and peripheral devices including digital cameras and video cameras, audio recorders, and projection equipment.
Provide systems administration for equipment and computers in School labs leveraging UW Information Technology Services (UW-IT), where appropriate. Manage remote computing solution(s) so that students can access specialized software applications on their own equipment.
ADMINISTRATION, BUDGET AND PLANNING 10% Manage and administer budgets for School computing services. Conduct research, testing, recommendation, and purchasing for computer software, hardware, and systems for staff, faculty, and computing labs. Write and administer Student Technology Fee grants as needed for maintaining core technological functioning of student labs and loan equipment.
Maintain inventory records for approximately 250 computer systems, software, and large (>400) number of peripheral devices including printers, scanners, cameras, removable storage devices and audio equipment.
Provide supervision of two staff and up to 6 student employees, which includes: scheduling work; monitoring performance to ensure compliance with guidelines, policies, and procedures; providing feedback on performance; and writing and conducting performance reviews. Perform disciplinary actions as needed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS BS in Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent work experience. Minimum of 2-4 years’ experience managing a heterogeneous computing environment
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Expert level experience with Apple OS and iOS based systems Experience troubleshooting and diagnosing Win 8 and 10 systems. Experience with Windows Server 2012 and above, and Apple OS server systems At least 2 years experience with networked systems, TCP/IP and SMB based Networking Experience with website creation and maintenance and Wordpress installations Ability to quickly learn and apply new or unfamiliar technologies. Excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities. Excellent customer service skills and demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information effectively with less- or non-technical users, often under pressure, while maintaining a positive and cooperative attitude. Ability to deal professionally, ethically and legally with confidential data. Proven ability to work as a productive, contributing member of a team who is creative, self-motivated and a problem-solver. Demonstrated experience working independently, and as both a member and leader of a team. Must be able to independently prepare equipment and budgetary proposals. Ability to work outside normal business hours to accommodate business needs and deadlines. Strong organizational, task-management and prioritization skills.
DESIRED Experience working in academic environment and a service-oriented organization. Experience with high-end graphical/video/IO devices, color printing technology, digital prepress systems and software; familiarity with additional graphic design applications Experience using JAMF device management software Database development using FileMaker Pro Knowledge of html and php coding
Supervision: Provide day-to-day supervision of two staff. Additionally provide top level supervision of up to 6 student employees, which includes: scheduling work; monitoring performance to ensure compliance with guidelines, policies, and procedures; providing feedback on performance; and writing and conducting performance reviews (regular staff only). Perform disciplinary actions as needed. The two staff are a half-time desktop computing support staff member and a full-time visual services staff member.
Working/environmental conditions This position is full-time and has peak periods where additional hours may be required (i.e., towards the end of each academic quarter) to maintain servers and computing labs ensuring uninterrupted operation. Occasional off-hours work involving email monitoring and replies for emergency or critical needs. Server maintenance is occasionally required during evening and weekend hours. Ability to lift 50 pounds.
