Detailed Job Description This professional librarian provides reference, research services, and instruction to students, staff, faculty and the community at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). As the liaison to the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences (GCCIS) with its six dynamic departments/schools and top-rated programs, the librarian will build an ongoing understanding of the disciplines and relevant library resources to navigate and provide instruction in all fields of study related to computing, cybersecurity, software engineering and game design. In addition this position will have a secondary role to work with non-college student support departments such as the Academic Success Center. The librarian is responsible for working as a member of the Research & Instruction Services department and collaborating with colleagues throughout the RIT Libraries and across campus to develop dynamic programs and instruction opportunities. The ideal candidate will be creative, curious and enthusiastic about teaching and collaboration with an interest in leading initiatives that support information, digital and visual literacy while developing programs that support student retention, diversity, equity, and inclusion within the library.
Responsible for providing access to knowledge by developing and maintaining library information resources to support the RIT curriculum and student/faculty scholarship for College of Computing and Information Sciences. Responsible for instructing (and assisting) the RIT community in the use of the library collections and information discovery systems. Responsible for serving as primary contact for students enrolled in and faculty teaching at the College of Computing and Information Sciences. In addition, this position will have a secondary role working with non-college student support departments such as the Academic Success Center. Responsible for working as part of the Research & Instruction Services department and collaborating with colleagues within the department, as well as across campus. Responsible for leading ongoing initiatives that support information literacy, developing innovative and effective programs that support student retention and success in collaboration with subject librarians and supporting offices across RIT. Responsible for continually examining and pursuing ways to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion within the library.
Responsibilities:
Support the research needs of students enrolled in the programs listed at their point of need.
Support the RIT community with their research needs at service points.
Act as liaison to the programs listed to promote two-way communication about library services, policies and users' needs/concerns.
Partner with faculty to provide curricular support and instruction sessions that support pedagogy and learning outcomes.
Conduct critical, continuous assessment of student learning and learning outcomes.
Provide informed selection, maintenance, and weeding of books, serials, databases and other appropriate materials based on the curricular and research needs of the colleges of the programs listed.
Act as liaison to these programs to assure curricular based coverage.
Partner with faculty to provide relevant, focused instruction at an increasingly-sophisticated level throughout the curriculum.
Provides instruction services to students enrolled in the programs listed, incorporating appropriate technologies, skills, innovations, and collaborations as needed.
Plan and conduct instruction in classroom, small-group, and non-traditional settings; promote course-specific instruction; collaborates with faculty to develop assignments and incorporate new resources into specific classes.
Develop relevant subject and course specific guides and tutorials that assist students with their research and teach them about the scope and breadth of information resources within their discipline.
Lead and/or coordinate workshops, programs and events that support student success by connecting students with library services, collections, programs, spaces, and expertise.
Collaborate with library colleagues, campus student support units, and student groups to identify needs and develop sustainable and high-impact initiatives that contribute to the first year experience.
Lead and participate in library-wide initiatives to examine current practices and strengthen policies that advance diversity, equity, and inclusion goals.
Provide equity-minded vision in the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of the library's collections, reference services, and information literacy instruction efforts
Department/College Description
Minimum Qualifications
Masters degree from ALA-accredited program of library or information science
1-2 years professional reference experience in an academic, public or special library
1-2 years experience in information research skill instruction
1-2 years familiar with information resource structures and core resources in appropriate disciplines
1-2 years experience with selection of curricular based materials
Reference interview skills
Working knowledge of major online information services
Working knowledge of discipline specific database services
Public speaking and presentation skills
Ability to assess and integrate appropriate complex information technologies into the collection and instruction programs
Competencies in information, digital, and/or data literacies
Experience in conducting outreach and engagement efforts with students and campus partners
Experience developing library programs, processes, or services that support student success
