Position Description:
The Digital, Data, and Design (D^3) Institute at Harvard is accepting applications for multiple postdoctoral fellows for academic year 2023-2024 to work on research activities at our research labs. D^3 launched in the summer of 2022 with 12 labs working on research at the intersection of academia and practice. For more information on D^3, please visit https://d3.harvard.edu.
The postdoctoral fellows will work under the direct supervision of faculty Principal Investigators and the Senior Associate Director, Lab Operations. They will work closely with the lab manager and research associate(s) at each lab. D^3 is looking for candidates with diverse backgrounds and/or new perspectives from the social and computational sciences. There are no teaching requirements for these open positions.
The Tech For All Lab, led by Professors Tarun Khanna and Rem Koning, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow. The lab aims to broaden the benefits of digital innovation and entrepreneurship to include more people in developing economies, women, people of color, and those in economically disadvantaged circumstances or regions. The lab will shed light on how digitization, data, and design can create value for firms and consumers who are often overlooked by, or who are simply the last to benefit from, new technologies.
A typical empirical project involves refining a research question, designing an experiment or survey, analyzing historical and experimental data using contemporary computational tools, and writing targeted at peer-reviewed social science journals. Candidates should have familiarity with:
- Causal analysis and experimental design: difference-in-differences and fixed effects models, instrumental variables, treatment selection, power analysis, analysis of attrition and non-compliance, analysis of heterogenous effects and interference;
- Programming and scripting tools needed to process large amounts of raw data for analysis (e.g., text manipulation);
- Machine learning and AI methods for text and image analysis and generation;
- One or more computational environments for statistical analysis (e.g., R, Python, or Stata);
- Writing papers for quantitative social science journals (e.g., Management Science, American Sociological Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Nature Human Behavior);
- Working with field research, understanding how to work with partner organizations, including government or companies.

- A Ph.D. in economics, operations, management, sociology, or a related field. Candidates with a background in Computer Science or Statistics who are interested in applying their skills to social science questions and managerial problems are also encouraged to apply. PLEASE NOTE: If you have obtained your Ph.D. in the past 12 months, you must be able to provide a certificate of completion from the degree-granting institution OR a letter from the institute's registrar stating all requirements for the degree have been successfully completed and should verify the date the degree has been conferred. No exceptions.

This is a term position through June 30, 2024, with the strong possibility of renewal based on funding and performance. Relocation funding not provided.
