Position Description
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is looking for a Comptroller to manage day-to-day accounting operation, including financial reporting, compliance, benefit plan, internal, and other audits, asset management, insurance, depreciation, retirement, financial system modernization, financial reports, fridge benefit calculations, grants post-award in coordination with the Office of Sponsored Programs, indirect cost proposals, annual compensation studies, process improvements, and as a senior leader, other duties in a supporting role for effective and efficient Laboratory financial operations, including budgeting, strategic and multi-year financial planning, capital budgeting debt management, accounts payable and receivable, interface/integration with grants administration, payroll, taxes, payments in lieu of taxes, cash management, and endowments.
Position Responsibilities
Prepare and maintain financial statements.
Review and approve daily/monthly journal entries.
Manage annual financial audit and Uniform Guidance audit.
Manage annual benefit plan audits.
Oversee and prepare quarterly internal financial statements.
Oversee and maintain proper business practices conforming to GAAP regulatory compliance and Lab policy.
Oversee and manage asset management and depreciation.
Manage and prepare month-end closing.
Manage financial system improvements and integration/interface with other Laboratory business systems.
Manage staff reporting to the Comptroller, and support management of other Finance staff as needed.
Provide leadership and technical support as directed to the following functions associated with the effective and efficient operation of the Laboratory’s finances:
Preparation and execution of the Laboratory operating budget
Manage daily operating cash accounts.
Accounts payable and receivable
Capital Budgeting
Debt management
Strategic and multi-year financial planning
Interface/integration with grants administration
Taxes and payments in lieu of taxes
Business case analysis
Endowment management
Position Requirements
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s of Business Administration with Accounting Focus is preferable.
CPA Required
EXPERIENCE:
Eight or more years of accounting experience, preferably managing or auditing non-profit organizations.
Three or more years of managerial experience supervising accounting/business office personnel preferred.
KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE JOB:
This position requires strong knowledge of accounting principles, practices, and internal control procedures, as well as experience in budgeting, cash management, grants administration, accounts receivable and payable, payroll, and related computing systems should these be needed to support effective and efficient delivery of the Laboratory’s financial operations.
Effective analytical, financial and business management skills. Ability to earn the trust and respect of co-workers and Laboratory community, creating positive relationships.
Ability to manage, supervise, and develop a diverse team of finance professionals.
Strong time management skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize work, ability to meet multiple and often competing deadlines. Strong project management skills.
Ability to evaluate and improve processes and leverage technology and tools. Inclination to document processes and policies while working in an environment where personal relationships and service are highly valued. Must be highly service oriented, while also motivated and able to drive increased efficiency.
Must be highly proficient with information technology and systems, including Microsoft Suite applications, and have excellent Excel skills, as well as strong proficiency with google tools. Ability to learn and work with various accounting programs.
Must be able to navigate an organization without strong organizational silos and be comfortable with ambiguity and situations where authority is diffused. Understanding of not for profit organizations, accounting, finance and regulations will be a significant asset.
Experience with Infor/Lawson (and/or similar not-for-profit accounting applications) strongly preferred
