External Affairs Specialist, Center for Security and Emerging Technology - Walsh School of Foreign Service - Georgetown University
Georgetown's Center for Security and Emerging Technology, under the School of Foreign Service, is a research organization focused on studying the security impacts of emerging technologies, supporting academic work in security and technology studies, and delivering nonpartisan analysis to technologists and policymakers.
Job Overview
The External Affairs Specialist assists with the Center's activities and communications, both internal and external facing. with a particular emphasis on media outreach. Duties include but are not limited to:
Devising strategies to gain positive media attention for the Center's research, individual researchers, and public events
Interacting on a regular basis with members of the media
Managing and assisting with events, including a monthly seminar series, periodic report launches, and an annual conference
Organizing and preparing CSET (print and electronic) materials for outreach to external stakeholders, including the U.S. Congress, the Executive Branch, academic institutions, non-profit organizations, the media and the general public
Facilitating periodic website updates, including minor text revisions, sub-page creation, and website hygiene
Crafting social media posts, press releases, and other external communications content to drive interest and engagement with newly-issued Center research publications
Participating in quality control of Center publications, which calls for considerable editing and writing skills
Work Interactions
Reporting to the Center's Director of External Affairs, the External Affairs Specialist takes part in team efforts to highlight CSET's work as it serves its dual mission of informing policymakers and preparing the next generation for policy-focused careers.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in communications, international relations, public policy or relevant field
6 to 8 years of relevant work experience providing communications and/or project management support
Exposure to policymaking staff - e.g., Congress, Department of State, Department of Defense
Ability to carry on assigned tasks with limited need for supervision
Proficiency with office productivity tools - e.g., Google Docs, Microsoft Office
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Excellent problem-solving skills and critical thinking skills
Preferred Qualifications
MA/MS or graduate coursework in public policy, public administration, international relations, or related field
Familiarity with Content Management Systems (like WordPress) and Marketing Automation solutions (like MailChimp)
Event planning experience
Foreign language proficiency
