The mission of the Arboretum is to conserve and restore Arboretum lands, advance restoration ecology, and foster the land ethic. The Associate Director provides a wide range of management support to the Arboretum, a center within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Education (OVCRGE). The successful candidate will oversee the administrative and operational structure for the Arboretum in support of this mission.
Founded in 1934, the Arboretum serves as a research and teaching center that includes natural restored areas, classic horticultural areas, and a variety of ecosystems for use by campus students and educators, as well as tens of thousands members of the public annually. The Arboretum is the site of the first prairie restoration and serves a worldwide community of scholars, researchers, and practitioners engaged in restoration, research, and education.
Working in strong collaboration with Arboretum, divisional, and campus-level colleagues, the Associate Director is responsible for all financial management, budget, human resources, research administration, communications, facilities, and administrative activities for a complex organization that has over a $2 million budget and employs 25+ full time staff in addition to a number of temporary employees (TEs), student employees, and volunteers. The budget includes funding sources from the state, grants, program revenue, and philanthropy. The successful candidate will exercise delegated authority with individual initiative and independent judgment in all aspects of the business office and will be part of the Arboretum Management Team.
Sample responsibilities and duties include: - Nurture the Arboretum's administrative infrastructure by leading strategic and long-range planning, including goal setting and policy making. - Maintain overall responsibility for budget development, grant/contract management, proposal submission and cost/revenue reporting. - Monitor financial operations of the Arboretum including University budgets, federal grants, contracts and cooperative agreements, revenue billings and accounts, trust and endowment accounts; ensure prudent accounting practices and compliance of all applicable rules, regulations, and laws. - Oversee human resource and benefits operations and develop creative solutions related to recruitment, onboarding, retentaion, compensation, and annual performance review procedures. - Provide general oversight for day to day facilities operations in the Arboretum Visitor Center. This includes oversight of daily cleaning and maintenance of the building interior and exterior, and serving as the liaison with the UW Department of Information Technology (DoIT). - Engage with OVCRGE and campus colleagues to keep up to date on business services, administrative, and human resources matters; implement business related changes to comply with university policies.
The Associate Director reports to the Director of the Arboretum. This position provides a combination of advice and procedural information to the Director on general administrative activities.
This position supervises and leads a Foundational Team comprised of 7 employees.

15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
5% Provides general oversight for day-to-day operations of the Arboretum Visitor Center
