UW Information Technology (UW-IT) is the central information technology organization for the University of Washington, responsible for strategic planning, oversight, and direction of the UW’s IT infrastructure, resources, and services. IT Infrastructure within UW-IT, provides knowledgeable system design and administration, software engineering, and operational support for academic systems, administrative systems, research computing, and service management.
UW-IT’s services include managing UW central IT infrastructure and services, such as administrative systems and information management, networking, telecommunications, data centers, information security and privacy, academic and collaborative applications, computing infrastructure, IT services and strategic sourcing, accessible technology, and technology business continuity.
The Senior Software Engineer supports business process improvement through technical, design, leadership, and outreach work with UW Connect (ServiceNow). This includes coding, teaching, and ensuring best ITIL best practices with the UW Connect platform. This position leads the design and development of applications and workflows based on ITIL business process improvement best practices. Using both business analysis and technical development, the SASE analyzes current workflows, gathers requirements, identifies workflow and technical gaps, and works either independently or leading others to improve UW Connect. The SASE also leads internal, technical meetings with the engineering staff about both solutions and team workflow.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Information Science, Computer Science, or related field.
Minimum of four years of experience designing, writing, implementing, and supporting software development. These years should include experience with:
o web applications using JavaScript
o relational databases
o HTML
o XML
Experience performing progressively more complex business analysis activities such as scope definition, requirements gathering, software development lifecycles, project management, and training.
Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and apply new methodologies, tools, etc.
Demonstrated excellent time management skills
Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision: both independently and as part of a team
Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills and technical documentation skills and user interaction ability
Ability to navigate in a complex, diverse technology environment
Ability to speak and write about technical issues for both technical and non-technical audiences
Experience as a functional leader or key contributor in complex, enterprise-wide, collaborative projects that have required significant business process change
Proven ability to represent business stakeholders effectively and translate between business and technical requirements
Familiarity with usage of request/incident ticketing software
Familiarity with ITIL
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED:
Experience with ServiceNow
Experience with ServiceNow's proprietary language (Jelly)
Experience with database schema design
Experience with Agile software development methodologies/concepts
Knowledge and skills in object, data, metadata, process, and/or information modeling
Knowledge and skills using REST architecture/technologies and/or service-oriented architecture
Experience with project management related tools (such as Jira)
Knowledge of IT accessibility issues for users with disabilities; familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices; experience testing for accessibility; and demonstrated ability to design content/applications with accessibility considerations
Experience performing Scrum Master role
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position contributes in a collaborative team environment, supported through a shared working environment, ad hoc meetings focused on design and/or problem-solving, and the use of a variety of development and communication tools. The incumbent may need to work varied hours to meet priority project milestones and other externally imposed deadlines and to accomplish work assignments on which the activities of others depend.
Work in an open office hybrid environment. 100% remote work can be approved on case by case individual basis.
