Summary of Duties:
The applied research program of the successful candidate will address issues facing the livestock industry involving strategic adaptation and improvements towards reduced carbon footprints, water use efficiency and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The individual will establish a nationally recognized integrated research and Extension program supported by competitive extramural funding from state, regional, and national agencies and agricultural industry. The individual will disseminate research-based information by publishing results in appropriate peer-reviewed journals and through Extension media outlets, delivering presentations at scientific conferences and industry/grower meetings, and using the internet and other modern communication platforms. The individual is expected to work collaboratively with other researchers, Extension professionals, private crop consultants, the grower community, and stakeholders and will actively engage in mentoring and supervision of graduate students. The individual will complement and extend current animal science initiatives and strengthen the Department of Animal Sciences. Integration with the Departmental missions and expertise may include improving the quality of the resulting food products, enhancing environmental compatibility of livestock operations, and increasing the economic profitability of food animal production systems. This position will serve a critical need for the Department of Animal Sciences to maintain excellence in livestock production, livestock production efficiency, student and stakeholder engagement and best practices associated with environmental stewardship.
The successful candidate will be a faculty member in the Department of Animal Sciences and will report to the Chair of Animal Sciences and the WSU-IAREC Director.
PhD in Animal Science, at time of hire, with a focus on Animal Physiology or Animal Nutrition.
Demonstrated expertise in evaluation of livestock metabolic efficiency, greenhouse gases, metabolism and modern production practices.
Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to work with diverse audiences in group and one-on-one settings.
Demonstrated excellence in program planning, implementation, and evaluation.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical and nontechnical audiences in oral and written forms.
Record of competitive grant success commensurate with career level.
Post-doctoral or industry experience.
Demonstration of successful team performance and work experiences with diverse stakeholders.
Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups of diverse cultures, and underrepresented/minority groups.
Expertise in precision agriculture in livestock.
WSU Extension faculty engage with local, state and regional stakeholders to identify needs to develop programming to meet those needs. Extension faculty are expected to deliver onsite and virtual Extension teaching and programming, online courses, continuing education, technical assistance, and consultation independently and in collaboration with other faculty. State Specialists work with county and regional Specialists to support the individual, organizational, and community goals of Washington learners and clients. Extension faculty are also expected to develop innovative and research-based educational materials and scholarly products, such as curricula, publications, presentations, websites, apps, and other teaching resources. Faculty are expected to be involved in the development of applied studies and the subsequent delivery of those findings through refereed journal publications, demonstrations, field days, workshops, print, digital and other electronic media, as appropriate.
THE DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCES:
The Department of Animal Sciences at WSU offers the only four-year Animal Sciences degree in Washington state. Research in Animal Sciences is focused on mission-oriented and fundamental research in the areas of sustainable resources for society and improving animal and human health. These research foci include animal behavior and well-being, environmental sustainability, genomics and genetics, muscle biology, nutrition, reproductive biology and physiology. Research is conducted in new state-of-the-art research facilities that facilitate undergraduate and graduate student research projects. PROSSER IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE RESEARCH AND EXTENSION CENTER:
The successful candidate will be based at WSU- Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (IAREC), Prosser, in Yakima Valley. The WSU-Prosser IAREC is a diverse and multifaceted Research and Extension center located near Prosser in Benton County. Benton County ranks first in the production of wine and juice grapes, second in the production of hops, and third in the production of tree fruits in Washington. The organic blueberry industry is also concentrated in Benton County. The county is bordered by Yakima and Grant counties, the first and second largest producers of tree fruit in the state. IAREC currently hosts 17 WSU faculty members associated with the departments of plant pathology, entomology, biological systems engineering, horticulture, and crop and soil science and 12 USDA-ARS scientists from six different ARS Units. The Center is also host to the WSU Subject Matter Centers: Center for Precision Agriculture and Automated Systems (CPAAS), Clean Plant Center Northwest (CPCNW), the Washington Agricultural Weather Network (AWN). Scientists at IAREC host over 35 graduate students from different countries worldwide.
