Job Description Summary
The Manager of Sustainability Projects and Outreach is a 12-month, full time position that will work collaboratively with the Department of Social Sciences, Office of Sustainability & Resilience, and the Tech Forward Initiative on Sustainability & Resilience. This position will help shape and support sustainability efforts at both the departmental level and across the institution. Core responsibilities include: 1) marketing and communications for sustainability degree programs, projects, and initiatives; 2) administrative and logistical support for new and ongoing sustainability initiatives; 3) identifying and supporting projects that increase sustainability performance and engagement; and 4) partnering across campus and in the community to develop and meet shared sustainability goals. This is a new position in a strategic priority area for the university, so there is opportunity for growth and resources for professional development.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
● Develop and execute a communication and marketing plan that engages students and staff and supports sustainability degree programs, curriculum, and involvement opportunities. ● Support internship and co-op opportunities for students in sustainability degree programs. ● Develop and support applied and project-based educational opportunities on campus and in the community. ● Assist in event planning, scheduling, marketing, and logistics. ● Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students to design and complete projects that advance sustainability goals in facilities, academics, and involvement. ● Under the direction of faculty, provide pre and post-award support for interdisciplinary research proposals and projects. ● Assist the Director in assessment and reporting via the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Reporting (STARS) framework and other methods. ● Collaborate with campus partners including students, facilities staff, and faculty to advance sustainability initiatives and enhance the visibility of achievements. ● Manage office administrative tasks including payroll, budget, scheduling and stipends for students in sustainability-related programs including Sustainability Demonstration House. ● Recruit, hire, train, and support student employees. ● Other administrative tasks as assigned.
● Two years of experience or post-secondary education in a sustainability-related field. ● Demonstrated capacity to take projects from inception to completion.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
● We value experience beyond paid employment or formal education, such as community-based projects and voluntary involvement. ● Demonstrated success in advancing sustainability initiatives. ● Experience working with staff and faculty in higher education. ● Project management experience.
● Demonstrated understanding of and passion for sustainability. ● Ability to develop and maintain positive professional relationships with individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives. ● Familiarity with basic graphic design, social media, and Google Suite. ● Experience working collaboratively with undergraduate students. ● A demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. ● Strong organizational skills. ● Event and program planning skills, including identifying and addressing important details. ● Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to comply with Michigan Tech vehicle-use requirements.
● Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
● Knowledge and skills of Content Management Systems for web-based applications. ● Experience with community development or engagement. ● Branding and social media experience in a professional setting.
Work Environment and/or Physical Demands
● This position will be collaboratively supervised by the Chair of the Social Sciences Department and the Director of Sustainability and Resilience. ● The office for this position will be located in the Department of Social Sciences, with regular meetings with the Director of Sustainability & Resilience in person at the Office of Sustainability & Resilience (in the library) 1-2 times each week. ● Occasional evening and weekend hours will be required to support events and student-focused activities. ● Moving small- to medium-sized boxes and materials for special events. ● Driving personal or university vehicles.
