The College of Earth, Ocean, & Atmospheric Sciences PacWave Department is seeking a Safety and Compliance Officer. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
PacWave, based at Oregon State University (OSU), operates two open water, wave energy test sites off the coast of Newport, Oregon. The Safety and Compliance Officer will serve as a key member of the core PacWave Team. The Safety and Compliance Officer's role will be to ensure compliance with all safety and environmental regulations and requirements through the construction and operational phases of the project. Once operational, PacWave South will serve as the primary, grid-connected, wave energy test site in the US and will support US-based and international client testing activities. The Safety and Compliance Officer will report directly to the PacWave Deputy Director and work closely with the Chief Scientist, Project Manager and other PacWave personnel. They will ensure safety of PacWave staff, clients, and visitors and will serve as the primary PacWave point of contact for the federal and state regulatory and permitting agencies. Extensive, independent interaction is required with potential clients, state and federal agencies, consultants, industry representatives, OSU faculty and staff, and the public.
The position may be based in Newport, Oregon (preferred), or Corvallis, Oregon. Work will be performed in both locations.
Typically requires Bachelor's degree in field related to assigned responsibilities. Experience interpreting, and applying laws, regulations, policies and contracts. May require certification or licensure.
Bachelor's Degree in environmental health, occupational safety, environmental policy or other relevant discipline.
Three years of experience in environmental health, environmental compliance or equivalent.
Demonstrated ability to operate unsupervised, prioritize workload, and exercise judgment in dealing with external and internal entities, and corporate and institutional representatives.
Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to build relationships with colleagues and clients.
Proficient computer skills, including MS Office Suite, Adobe, email, and ability to quickly learn software applications.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Must be able to perform tasks remotely or on-site as conditions dictate.
This position requires regular driving and travel between OSU (Corvallis, Oregon) and PacWave offices and field sites (Newport, Oregon). Other regional, national, or international travel may be required on occasion.
Work in adverse conditions may be required, including outdoors or on-water work where cold, hot, windy, wet, or sunny conditions may be encountered.
Schedule flexibility: some activities may take place at non-traditional times.
Must be able to be contacted outside of normal working hours.
