The Helen Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies (formerly Berkeley Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies) at Berkeley Law was launched in 2011 by a 15-member faculty committee drawn from the faculties of Economics, History, Jewish Studies, Music, Political Science, Sociology, and Law as well as Business.
The Institutes' two initiatives - one focused on Jewish law, thought, and identity; the other on the multidisciplinary study of Israel - serve undergraduates, graduate students and faculty by developing opportunities for research, programming, visiting scholars, colloquia and classes to strengthen academic inquiry and discourse across the Berkeley campus. The Institute was renamed in February 2021 following the award of a $10 million endowment gift from the Helen Diller Foundation.
Within its two core programs - the Program on Israel Studies and the Program on Jewish Law, Thought, and Identity - the Helen Diller Institute has a primary mission of educating, engaging, and empowering students and fostering the next generation of student leaders. The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Programs takes the lead in engaging, guiding, and growing this cohort of student leaders, and designing a robust curriculum of student programs, professional development workshops, and mentorship initiatives. Specifically, in addition to extensive communication and collaboration with students and student groups across the campus to bring them into the courses and programs of the Institute, the Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Programs runs the Institute's flagship Undergraduate Fellows Program, which is at the heart of the Institute's mission and goals of student education, engagement, and empowerment.
The Undergraduate Fellows Program has doubled in size in the past three years. Moreover, initiatives such as the professional development workshop series and the mentorship are new initiatives that have come on line as part of the fellowship. The Institute is working on experiential learning programs in Israel, including a Global Internship Program in Haifa launching in summer 2022. The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Programs has a significant role to play in the recruitment of students and the coordination and execution of this experiential learning program on the ground. Similarly, the Institute has plans for a new initiative for cross-campus student engagement, with the intention of bringing Berkeley and Stanford students together for academic programs and travel to Israel. The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Programs would have a hand in shaping and implementing this new initiative.
On the academic front, the Institute has submitted a proposal for a minor in Israel Studies. Once approved, the Institute will administer the academic minor. The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Programs will have a supportive role in advising students interested in pursuing the minor in Israel Studies, alongside the Executive Director.
Given the shifts in technology over the pandemic period, this position requires technology savvy skills and strong communication skills in relation to the planning, marketing and execution of student programs and other student engagement strategies, including knowledge of Zoom meetings and webinars, web design and social media skills, and communication work in Constant Contact, Facebook, and Instagram.
This position reports directly to the Helen Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies (BIJLIS), Executive Director and works closely with the Executive Director, Deputy Director (and Advancement Director), Communications and Marketing Coordinator, Program Administrator, and Faculty Directors of the Helen Diller Institute.

The Assistant Director for Student Engagement and Programs:
Spearheads all outreach and engagement with students; facilitates communication and collaboration with students and student leaders; manages advertising of Institute programs, including public events and conferences, among students and student groups; works with student groups to spread information about the Helen Diller Institute and programs.
Develops and manages substantive events and series directed at students, collaborating with faculty, student groups, and campus and community partners.
Helps the Institute identify student-initiated programs that the Institute can support.
Builds and coordinates a network of student fellows affiliated with the Institute: an 'Undergraduate Fellows Program' engaged in the work of the Institute that takes on leadership roles in creating student programming, with guidance and effective management from the Assistant Director.
Manages the mentorship programs for student fellows, which provide fellows with real world guidance and advice and act as a bridge to the world beyond college.
Matches fellows with alumni and with community leaders, tracking the progress of those relationships, and assessing their success.
Plays an active role in the recruitment of students for the Global Internship Program in Haifa, in coordination with Institute partners, through outreach and marketing, visits to classrooms, direct communication with interested students.
Contributes to the coordination and implementation of the orientation program and the summer program on the ground.
Partners with internal and external stakeholders to develop the cross-campus engagement and collaboration of students between Berkeley and Stanford as part of the broader experiential learning programming of the Institute.
Promotes Institute curriculum among students, working with various academic departments, undergraduate advisors, and student groups to advertise Institute courses and help bolster course enrollment.
With development of an Israel Studies minor, collaborates with Executive Director and Communications and Marketing Coordinator to advertise the Israel Studies minor across campus.
Assists the Executive Director to administer the minor and provides advising to students interested in and pursuing the minor.
Conducts research to inform strategic plans for student programming and the undergraduate fellowship program.
Supervises a small team of work study students, overseeing and monitoring their work, and providing them guidance and training as needed.
Manages and supervises 20-25 undergraduate fellows with their projects and initiatives. The Assistant Director is also an active member of the Institute's staff, teaching and transferring tasks.
Supports technical needs -- from virtual programs and zoom facilitation, to editing videos and audio -- and supports communication and social media needs - e.g. Constant Contact, Facebook, Instagram -- relating to student programs and engagement.
Supports customer service to students and campus visitors and through the Institute's shared email to answer routine inquiries, including questions received on-line via the internet.
Thorough knowledge of basic concepts, principles, and procedures of building and maintaining effective relations with internal and external constituencies.
Thorough knowledge of and/or ability to learn the campus, its mission, goals, objectives, programs, achievements, infrastructure and issues of concern as well as an understanding and experience with the subject matter (Israel Studies and Jewish Law, Thought and Identity).
Thorough written, verbal and interpersonal communications, tact and political acumen to effectively represent the campus, such as Constant Contact and newsletter creation, email outreach, social media maintenance.
Thorough research, analytical and critical thinking skills, including sound judgment and decision-making skills and skill to correctly identifying real and potential problems, advising management as required, and proposing effective strategic resolutions.
Skill in project management and full cycle event planning for a robust schedule of programming and ability to create and meet deadlines.
Technological savvy, initiate and facilitate virtual programming, problem solve tech issues in online programs.
Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, video conferencing platforms, and social media platforms, and the ability to learn new computer programs and software systems.
Strong attention to detail.

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Experience organizing and conducting in-person and online event planning and facilitation (program management, zoom, google apps, hangouts, canva, etc.).

Strong communication and interpersonal skills in relation to the planning, marketing and execution of student programs and other student engagement strategies, including knowledge of Zoom meetings and webinars, web design and social media skills, and communication work in Constant Contact, Facebook, and Instagram preferred.
Master's degree or 3-5 years of experience in relevant field and/or equivalent training or experience preferred.
Experience developing, designing and/or implementing programs, events and initiatives in an academic environment preferred.
Salary & Benefits
This is a two-year, 100% full-time, 40-hours per week, Contract appointment with the possibility of extension.
This position is eligible for full UC benefits.
This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $68,000.00 - $76,000.00.
