Made possible by a $20-million commitment from the Paul and Stacy Jacobs Foundation, Berkeley Engineering launched the Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation at the Clinton Global Initiative in June 2013. The Jacobs Institute for Design Innovation expands the role of design in undergraduate and masters-level engineering education at the University of California, Berkeley. As the Institute works to further its mission of educating leading innovators at the intersection of design and technology, it provides students with hands-on experiences and opportunities to work in interdisciplinary teams to address real societal issues. Students are challenged to approach the entire cycle of design, from identifying user needs to rapid prototyping to commercialization and manufacturing, from an integrated vantage point.
We accomplish these goals through a suite of offerings that include curricular, co-curricular and public programs.
Core programs within the Jacobs Institute include: the Berkeley Certificate in Design Innovation, an undergraduate certificate offered in partnership with the Haas School of Business, College of Letters & Science, and College of Environmental Design; a curriculum of 6-8 design-focused courses offered fall, spring and summer, for which the institute recruits lecturers and faculty; a makerspace staffed by professional and student workers which is accessed by 1200+ students each semester; mentorship and co-curricular programming for students, such as the Innovation Catalyst program & career services support; supporting 15+ design and innovation courses from campus departments and 25+ clubs and decals each semester by offering access to high quality teaching, meeting and event space; public events and speaker series; a professional Master of Design degree, offered in partnership with the College of Environmental Design and housed within the Jacobs Institute; and partnerships with companies and international universities.
The Jacobs Institute is housed in Jacobs Hall, a 24,000 square foot building equipped with design studios and equipment rooms featuring the latest in digital fabrication technologies.
The Director of Academic Affairs will play an essential, leadership role advancing the overall academic mission of the Institute's curricular and cocurricular programs, including the Master of Design program. This role reports to the Executive Director of the Jacobs Institute, with a dotted line to Associate Faculty Director of the Jacobs Institute and the Associate Dean for Post-Baccalaureate Programs in the College of Engineering, and will engage closely with the faculty leadership and affiliated faculty. The director serves as a liaison to other graduate professional programs within the College of Engineering and to the College of Environmental Design.
The Director of Academic Affairs is the lead staff member responsible for curricular and co-curricular offerings and degree programs, including academic and student services; admissions, and outreach/recruitment; staff management; finances; and academic administration. The Director will supervise student affairs staff.

30% Student Services
With support from student services staff, develops and implements excellent student services programs unique to each student population, including academic, and co-curricular (e.g. Innovation Catalyst Grants, competitions, etc.) programming.
Collaborates with JIDI Director of Career Services to support the development and implementation of career services programming for Master of Design & undergraduate JIDI students.
Is responsible for overall student experience, and works to ensure a positive culture for JIDI students, and to achieve high program satisfaction among current students.
Oversees programs in support of student life and leadership, including the Student Advisory Board and the Master of Design Student Association. Looks for opportunities to bridge constituencies and create a strong, supportive, inclusive and cohesive community across the JIDI student community. Proactively creates policies and programs to support a diverse and inclusive student body.
25% Graduate Admissions
Works with faculty to set graduate admissions targets and policies. Actively works to recruit a diverse pool of applicants with a range of life, academic, and professional backgrounds.
With faculty leadership, oversees and manages the MDes admissions program.
Coordinates the development and analysis of admissions metrics and statistics as a basis for evaluation, planning, and goal-setting.
Evaluates the effectiveness of the graduate admissions program in coordination with JIDI leadership and MDes Education Committee. Works with these groups to recommend improvements.
15% Academic Administration and Curriculum Planning
With support from the Student Services Advisors, manages curriculum planning and scheduling for all course offerings.
Works with faculty leadership on curricular planning each semester, identifying needs and opportunities for course offerings.
Works with Faculty Directors and Executive Director to fill teaching positions, through recruiting senate faculty to teach, and hiring lecturers and GSIs. Working within campus guidelines, seeks to hire a suite of faculty who are broadly representative of diverse life and professional backgrounds.
Reviews course evaluations, reviews exceptional requests for course or degree requirements from students, and provides input to faculty leadership and MDes Education Committee on proposed changes to curriculum.
Interprets campus policy, and develops policies internal to undergraduate graduate certificate and graduate program as appropriate.
15% Program Marketing, Outreach, and Student Recruitment
Develops recruitment programs, events, materials, and outreach services to engage potential students.
Collaborates with JIDI Sr. External Relations Director to make use of a range of media/methods (in-person, print, electronic) and scales (one-on-one, large events) to achieve recruitment goals. Provides tailored content to support marketing efforts.
Manages communications with prospective students on questions regarding the programs through a variety of communication channels.
Evaluates effectiveness of recruitment programs and makes recommendations to enhance yields.
5% Financial Aid
Evaluates and coordinates financial aid and department awards to meet strategic goals, and to enhance yield and cohort diversity in terms of life, academic and professional backgrounds.
Recommends resolution of extremely specialized and complex financial aid issues.
Presents financial aid analysis and recommendations to faculty directors and MDes Education Committee.
5% Manages Program Budgeting and Data
Works with JIDI Managing Director to reconcile MDes program and curricular offerings budget and expenses quarterly.
Tracks key metrics and data for the MDes and curricular offerings.
Maintains and manages agreements for seat buy-outs with departments for MDes student enrollment in their courses.
Works with College Finance Team and JIDI leadership to develop proposals to campus and UCOP for SSGPDP program fees annually.
Recommends and implements decisions on issues (operational and budget processes, admissions, staff FTE, finance, human resources and space planning) that have curricular-wide impact. Advise faculty leadership on matters concerning several strategic and/or functional areas and constituencies. - Supervises student workers, contract and two career staff.
Provides on-boarding and other support to lecturers.
5% Coordinates with key staff in the Jacobs Institute, College of Engineering, College of Environmental Design, the Graduate Division, and other campus offices, as needed.

Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
