SLAVIC & EAST EUROPEAN LANG & (BL-SLAV-IUBLA)
Department Information
As a part of the Division of Arts and Humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana University's Department of Slavic and East European Languages and Cultures offers a full array of language, literature, culture, and linguistics courses for students interested in the study of Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Czech, Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian. We offer an undergraduate major and a minor and both master's and Ph.D. program. IU is the only university in the state of Indiana to offer a doctoral degree in Slavic Languages and Literatures.
Our department's faculty members represent one of the largest and best concentrations of expertise in the United States, with particular strengths in comparative literary and cultural topics, translation, and second language acquisition. Our students participate in language practice tables (available for all languages), study abroad, talent shows, the Zeta Zeta chapter of Dobro Slovo National Slavic Honor Society, and the annual American Council of Teachers of Russian (ACTR) national post-secondary Russian essay contest. Special concerts, exhibits, lectures, film screenings, pedagogy workshops and other events are often open to the public and advertised in our section of the main IU Calendar of Events.
The department houses a U.S. Department of Defense funded Russian Flagship program, one of only eight in the U.S., which trains Russian language learners to superior levels of proficiency. It also features its own in-house press, Slavica Publishers, the leading U.S. specialty press devoted to scholarly monographs, collections of research articles, textbooks, reference works, and journals serving the field of Slavic research articles, textbooks, reference works, and journals serving the field of Slavic languages and literatures, as well as Slavic and East European studies in general.
The department works in cooperation with IU's U.S. Department of Education funded Title VI Center, the Russian and East European Institute (REEI), to offer a variety of co-curricular programming throughout the year. Intensive summer training in Russian and other East European languages has been offered at IU Bloomington since 1950. Indiana University's summer Language Workshop remains the largest such program in the United States, offering students the opportunity to complete a full year of college language instruction during a single eight-week summer session for reduced tuition rates.
