PRIMARY DUTY: At Northwest Missouri State University Wellness Services, we know that a well student is a successful student, and with every interaction we support each individual’s pursuit of wellness. The Wellness Educator is a member of our team who primarily leads the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the ENGAGE program. This is an innovative multi-level violence prevention strategy that focuses on encouraging a culture of care. It is a new program being implemented at higher education institutions in Missouri in partnership with Missouri Partners in Prevention [PIP], The Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence [MOCADSV], and funded by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services [MDHSS]. This program includes: 1) a bystander engagement program to reduce harm on campus related to alcohol use, drug use, violence, acts of bias and discrimination, and suicide/mental health, 2) an online training for first year students, and 3) community-level violence prevention elements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Wellness Education
- Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the ENGAGE Program.
- Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of other wellness education programs and services that build student skills in all 8 Dimensions of Wellness: Physical, Social, Spiritual, Emotional, Financial, Environmental, Intellectual, Occupational.
- Ensure programs and services contribute to inclusive excellence.
- Marketing and Communication
- Contribute towards marketing and communication strategies for Wellness Education and Prevention that encourage engagement, skill-building, and positive behaviors.
- Team Development
- Assist with the hiring, training, and evaluating of WEP Graduate Assistants, Student Employees, and Peer Educators.
- Contribute towards a work culture that attracts and retains Wellness Services team members.
- Research and Assessment
- Implement and evaluate evidence-based, best practice programs and services that meet our students’ needs.
- Contribution to the Wellness Department
- Work closely with other members of the Wellness Services team to effectively collaborate on programs and services to meet strategic objectives.
- Contribution to the Institution and Community
- Work closely with other members of the University and Community to collaborate for greater impact
- Actively participate in local, state, and national violence prevention groups
REQUIREMENTS:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Experience:
- 1 year working full-time, or 2 years as a graduate assistant, in a related program or field
Skills:
- Strong understanding and passion for wellness education and prevention
- Baseline knowledge in the four areas addressed by the ENGAGE program: alcohol and drug misuse, interpersonal violence, bias, and mental health/suicidality
- Leadership and interpersonal skills for engaging a broad group of stakeholders
- Marketing and communication skills including an ability to create compelling and effective presentations, promotional materials, and messages for a variety of audiences
- Ability to quickly assess and problem-solve in complex situations through effective listening, consultation, data analysis and critical thinking skills
- Strong research and assessment skills
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work will take place in a modern facility as well as multiple campus locations with varying temperatures and accommodations. The environment includes a team-based, collaborative atmosphere with synergistic staff. Remote work may be possible for periods of time, but in-person meetings and attendance at programs and events will be required the majority of time. Working some evenings/weekends to reach some audiences may be necessary and work time may be flexed to accommodate within a 40-hour work week.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No official direct reports, but significant opportunity to share leadership and mentoring of student employees
EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED: Basic office equipment (computer, printer, phone, copier)
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Sitting for long periods of time in front of a computer. Lifting boxes and materials up to 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
