Communications Specialist 3 SOM: SOM: Neurology - Sacramento CampusDepartment Description
The Department of Neurology conducts basic and clinical research on the nervous system and provides clinical care for people with neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, epilepsy, movement disorders like Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases, tremor, dystonia, multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular conditions, headache and sleep disorders.
Our faculty includes leading neuroscientists, who work to expand our knowledge of nervous system function, as well as neurologists and psychologists who provide diagnosis and treatment for adults and children. We partner with colleagues from throughout the health system and work closely with the Department of Neurological Surgery to provide multidisciplinary team management for neurological disorders. We also offer cutting-edge diagnostic approaches, including advanced neuroimaging technologies and access to trials of new medications and other therapeutic modalities.

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer for Neurology & Neurological Surgery, and in partnership with the UCDH offices of Marketing and Public Affairs, the Communications Specialist 3 will develop, implement and maintain a comprehensive communications and media strategy to enhance the entire neurosciences service line, including multiple related School of Medicine departments and Hospital programs while increasing the visibility of School of Medicine neurosciences and related faculty locally and nationally.
The incumbent will provide support and coordination through marketing and advertising, digital and social media, media relations, internal communications and assorted other mechanisms to reach all target audiences. The Communications Specialist will research, write, edit and/or produce clear and compelling written, visual, digital, and electronic communications. They will work with management to develop and execute organizational communication and branding strategy in close coordination with UCDH Marketing, Public Affairs and Development offices.
Required Qualifications Required Qualifications Applicants are encouraged to upload license and certification if required of the position.
- Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or a combination of experience, education and/or training required.
- Experience with publishing techniques, editorial and graphic design.
- Experience conceptualizing, planning, developing publications for various audiences.
- Experience with the dissemination of information to a wide range of audiences.
- Advanced experience writing, editing, proofreading, preparing, and producing correspondence reports and various types of professional publications; including skills to use language effectively and creatively, using appropriate writing guidelines to translate complex concepts into lay terms.
- Advanced experience in message development, audience identification, issues management, and overall communications planning.
- Advanced background in developing effective communication strategies and working with leadership on long- and short-term strategic communication plans.
- Skills to independently identify and research issues and analyze complex data and information to formulate recommendations to resolve issues.
- Experience with but not limited to web content management systems, web-editing tools, Microsoft Suites, and major social media tools. Ability to learn UC Davis TeamSite to manage departmental websites.
- Strong interviewing, active listening and political acumen skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with analytical survey data tools (e.g. Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, etc.)
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with large and diverse group individuals from all levels of the organization.
- Proficient with organizational and time management tools to work on programs and projects that require attention and focus on details.
- Skills to work independently and cooperatively in a fast-paced environment with competing deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications - Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent work experience, preferably in English, journalism, marketing or communications
- Professional experience in writing or applicable communications-related work in healthcare/education setting
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite applications, Photoshop, InDesign, and Dreamweaver preferred
- Familiar with UC Davis and UC Davis Health communication tools and standards
Special Requirements This position may require flex time to meet critical deadlines, occasional travel between campus and off-campus location, attend events or provide other department support, and work at a computer for extended periods of time.
