The Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) School of Architecture (SoA) is looking for individuals with a strong background in architecture and computational design that elevates the discipline through research work, scholarly work, artistic work, and/or professional practice.
The School welcomes established practitioners to develop a body of work while teaching in a dynamic school of architecture. We have openings for adjunct faculty in upper level/ graduate courses including the Digital Skills Workshop (DSW) course. While we welcome all applications; preference will be given to those that directly address the content of the particular course.
Course Description
DSW is a 3-unit mini summer course (#48-689) for incoming SoA Masters students to establish a baseline of digital design skills appropriate to the expectations of the design culture at SoA. This course is mandatory for all incoming MAAD, M.Arch, MUD, MSSD, and MSBPD students. The full extent of the course must be completed in order to receive a passing grade for the course that will appear on the fall semester transcript. DSW is optional for students in other SoA Masters programs.
DSW Part 1, Representation & Computation, is an online-only series of micro workshops, assignments, and tutorials on digital design skills delivered online. Organized around four short design exercises, students will demonstrate the fundamentals of 2D graphics (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), architectural drafting (Rhino), 3D modeling (Rhino), and parametric modeling (Grasshopper).
DSW Part 2 (if in person instruction), Fabrication, is a series of hands-on introduction to the woodwork machineries, laser cutter, CNC router, 3D printer, vacuum former, general policies and procedures of the ArchSHOP and Digital Fabrication Laboratory (dFAB) facilities. Students are required to attend in person during the time slots that will be announced towards the end of DSW Part 1 online sessions.
DSW will cover specific tools and workflows to equip students with the foundational skills for solving design problems through the use of computational tools. All SoA students are expected to be familiar with the protocols and workflows covered in DSW.
Every week you will be expected to teach Monday from 10:00-12:00pm and additional 10 hours later in the week to meet individually with all students registered in the course starting the week of June 21, 2021 through the submission of final grade and assessment reports by September 11, 2021. It is also expected that you will support students via asynchronous means (e.g. e-mail, Canvas, Miro, etc.) for 2 hours per week and prepare course materials for 6 hours per week.

This position requires an advanced degree in Architecture or Architectural Technology. Prior academic experience in teaching or completing courses with distinction on digital media, computational design, and general skills onboarding for graduate level architectural design programs is required.
