The Aluminum Association (TAA), based in Arlington, VA is searching for a Sustainability Director. Established in 1933, TAA is the trade association for the North American aluminum industry and has a $7.5M budget. The Aluminum Association is the industry’s leading voice in Washington, D.C., providing global standards, industry statistics, trade policy and expert knowledge to member companies and policy makers nationwide. Highly engaged in public policy and technical forums, the Association is committed to advancing aluminum as the sustainable metal of choice around the world.
With general guidance from the VP, External Affairs, the Sustainability Director will formulate and communicate the umbrella sustainability strategy of the U.S. aluminum industry. The Director will identify key audiences and package existing and new industry initiatives to leverage aluminum’s key sustainability characteristics, shaping a narrative about the metal to move markets. Working with a dynamic team across departments, the Director will help to realize the association’s vision to move the aluminum industry forward in its sustainable future. The Director’s goal is to plan, develop and deploy programs and communications that deliver the association’s body of work benchmarking the benefits of aluminum.
Responsibilities
Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability communications strategy with measurable outcomes to establish aluminum as a sustainable material of choice in its major markets.
- Mobilize existing benchmarking and research to develop compelling, engaging content that demonstrates the industry’s positive environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance.
- In partnership with the association team, identify future research and benchmarking needs to steward the industry’s credibility in the sustainability space.
- Serve as the staff executive for the association’s Sustainability Advisory Council.
- Coordinate a common sustainability platform of messaging, policy positions, goals and metrics, leveraging aluminum’s unique attributes to advance the metal as a sustainable material of choice.
- In consultation with internal and member leadership, oversee association’s sustainability program budget.
- Provide guidance and communications support for association’s market committees as they develop a common sustainability platform.
- Identify key sustainability stakeholders and manage the association’s relationship with them to maximize outcomes based on the industry’s sustainability platform.
- Work with both traditional and social media to create external presentations designed to advance the industry’s thought leadership on ESG issues.
- Provide communications counsel to a broad group of executives and partners, including member companies, to amplify and elevate sustainability-focused successes.
- Lead the production of an annual Sustainability Report, working with internal teams and contract writers and designers.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Government Affairs, or Environmental Studies - or related disciple.
- 7 - 10 years of directly related experience, including some in a nonprofit/association setting plus previous experience in project management.
- Demonstrated skill in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software programs.
- Experience writing content for social media platforms and an understanding of how the platforms are unique from each other.
- Demonstrated ability to read, analyze, interpret, and summarize key items from technical publications.
- Demonstrated written and verbal communications skills to effectively address all levels of audiences from mid-level professionals to senior executives.
- Flexibility to work extended hours, when required, to coordinate evening or weekend meetings and travel domestically and internationally.
