Cornell University embraces diversity and seeks candidates who will contribute to a climate that supports students, faculty and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We strongly encourage individuals from underrepresented and/or marginalized identities to apply.
As part of the university's comprehensive vaccination program, all Cornell employees are required to have and provide proof of an FDA-or WHO-authorized or approved COVID-19 vaccine or have obtained a university-approved disability/medical or religious exemption, regardless of their role and work location.
New hires are required to provide documentation showing full vaccination status (that is, completion of two shots of the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or one shot of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson) before their first day of work. If a new hire's vaccination is not complete or information is not received by their start date, the first day of work will be delayed. It is possible in some cases that an offer of employment may be withdrawn.

The MPS degree can be completed in one year, and provides rigorous training in all aspects of parasitology at one of the nation's top Colleges of Veterinary Medicine.
Parasitology research of the MPS program director is funded through corporate and federal sources involving soil transmitted parasites, parasites of wildlife, host response to soil transmitted pathogens, and detection of soil transmitted parasites. The MPS lab is primarily a teaching laboratory and the ideal candidate is interested in both staying current with topics of advanced research in parasitology and supporting broader parasitology undergraduate and graduate laboratory education and fieldwork.
Once established and trained in the lab, we will rely on you to:
MPS Teaching Space Assistance:

- Repair existing equipment and suggest required maintenance and equipment purchases.

- Ensure safe lab practices by students when in the lab
- Organize samples and replace study-set samples with new specimens when needed, along with maintaining supplies for specimen maintenance.

- Maintain the computer resource of the MPS teaching materials and images for access to the laboratories.
- Perform routine care and refurbishing of the microscopes routinely used by the students in the lab.
MPS Lab Instruction Assistance:
- Assist teaching staff by preparing lab space for students.
- Ensuring specimens and supplies are ready for each day's lab and for cleanup after labs.
- Dispose of chemical and biological waste accordingly.
- Assist in refining labs for the next time after each lab is completed and with maintaining inventory and the ordering of need lab supplies
MPS Museum Room Management
- Maintain the teaching collection of approximately 43,000 parasitological specimens and also the physical collection of approximately 3,000 -5,000 images that are maintained in the museum space with the goals of still having them digitized.
- Organize the existing collection into a readily accessible and ready to use teaching resource with barcodes and digital database, restore and rebuild individual specimens with fluid and refill, re-mount, and recover slip as needed.
- Provide new containers for specimens as needed along with stains, reagents, etc., for specimen handling, fixation, and preservation.
- Prepare and preserve new parasite acquisitions.
This position is 39 hours per week, with some weekend hours required occasionally. This is a position in a biohazard level II lab.
*This is a three-year term position; reappointment will be contingent upon funding and performance.
What you need to have:
- An Associates degree in a science related field and up to two years of laboratory experience or equivalent combination of education.

- Experience with cataloging museum collections and with specimen preservation, microscope slide preparation and accession organization.
- Excellent oral and written communication and relational skills and strong attention to detail
- Propensity to learn computer skills (MS Office, email, internet searches, and data analysis programs).
- Capability to work precisely and confidently with strong manual dexterity and adhere to concurrent timelines regularly.
- Laboratory science is a team sport: organization is critical, and working proactively will be as important as being team-oriented.
