Overview: The Senior Associate Director of Alumni Relations is a critical member of the Office of Alumni Relations and leads our lifelong learning program. This highly cross-functional role has the primary responsibility for the strategic development, management, implementation, and evaluation of lifelong learning initiatives in alumni relations with a focus on digital engagement. The Senior Associate Director leverages university, alumni, and community relationships and resources to create opportunities for community members to engage with Hopkins expertise (regardless of location) and provides vision and strategic oversight for the lifelong learning initiatives within the Office of Alumni Relations. This position will have regular contact with the Office of the President, Divisional Deans and leaders, advisory boards and councils, Vice Provost and Office of Research, and Vice Provost of Life Design and Integrative Learning.
Team Description: The Office of Alumni Relations is a centrally-positioned team of 25 professional staff within Development and Alumni Relations charged with engaging an alumni population of over 240,000. The Office of Alumni Relations advances the mission of the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association to enrich the alumni experience and foster beneficial relationships within the Johns Hopkins community. This position reports to the Sr. Director of Alumni Relations. The Lifelong Learning team consists of this position as the lead, along with an Associate Director, Assistant Director, Media General, Graduate Assistant and student employees.
Program Description: The Lifelong Learning program within the Office of Alumni Relations began in Spring 2020. The program leverages the intellectual capital of Johns Hopkins University to provide ongoing digital, hybrid and in-person experiences that appeal to Johns Hopkins constituents (alumni, friends, donors, grateful patients) in addition to a broader community audience. Experiences that fall under Lifelong Learning have a focus on faculty and academic pursuits, industry networking, and enrichment programs.
The Lifelong Learning portfolio
Hopkins at Home brings Hopkins experts and influential community leaders into the homes of our alumni, friends, and community members via one-time live-streamed lectures and academic mini-courses. These programs are free and open to the public, with target marketing toward the alumni association. Established in 2020, this program engages with faculty from across Johns Hopkins and opens the door to inspiring, academic conversation across disciplines.
Odysseyprograms consist of non-credit, academic courses for personal enrichment. These multi-session classes are taught by Hopkins faculty, alumni, staff, or community experts. These programs are tuition funded, and open to the public with discounted tuition for alumni, staff, faculty, and retirees.
Open Doors is a short-form, video-based piece that features Hopkins faculty teaching or providing the audience with insight they might not otherwise see. These pre-recorded pieces are designed for social media and are no more than 5 minutes in length.
Alumni Industry Networks bring alumni from across the divisions together around their professional interests. Programming consists of a mix of virtual offerings and in-person gatherings in our key regional cities across the United States. Network examples include Arts, Entertainment & Media, Healthcare, Law, etc.
Alumni Authors Bookshelf and Alumni Book Club – The Alumni Authors Bookshelf is an online catalog highlighting books written by our alumni. The Alumni Book Club is managed through a third-party vendor and offers online discussions for our alumni around selected readings.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Staff and Volunteer Management
Lead the operations of the lifelong learning team within the Office of Alumni Relations
Manage a team consisting of Associate Director, Assistant Director, Media Generalist, Graduate Assistant and student workers; lead team meetings, oversee workplans, set goals and deadlines, provide ongoing feedback and conduct annual reviews for staff
Guide and mentor staff members; provide training and development opportunities to assure skill building and professional growth
Provide ongoing training for alumni volunteers involved in the planning and execution of lifelong learning programs
Serve as a staff liaison for Alumni Council committees and working groups as assigned
Identify opportunities for alumni to re-engage with learning at Johns Hopkins in meaningful, non-traditional ways
Create and support digital, in-person, or hybrid content across disciplines
Oversee the Hopkins at Home program; including the identification and training of faculty members to lead livestream talks and mini-courses
Oversee Odyssey program; including the identification and training of alumni, faculty/staff and community experts to lead enrichment courses
Oversee alumni industry networks; partner with alumni volunteers to create professional development programs and interpersonal networking opportunities
Manage the lifelong learning program budgets; assure that the Odyssey program is covering all costs through tuition revenue
Collaborate with divisional partners on engagement opportunities that feature faculty and alumni that support lifelong learning
Assist with the identification and recruitment of faculty for initiatives such as Alumni Colleges, Alumni Journeys trips, and other alumni-focused speaking opportunities
Development of partnerships with for credit programs to allow access to Johns Hopkins alumni
Partner with Communications team on marketing, event promotion, and social media strategy
Write content and copy for the website, course descriptions, email correspondence, and program reports.
Track and report data on participants, faculty, viewership, and giving for university leadership.
Steward all Hopkins at Home and Odyssey donors and faculty.
Research lifelong learning trends and best practices for engagement potential and make recommendations for the Office of Alumni Relations.
Course Development, Instructional Design, and Media Management
Establish an evaluative process for courses that provides feedback to instructors
Develop and execute ongoing faculty training in preparation of courses
Provide instructional support during course development and execution
Assess program effectiveness and make recommendations about future programming
Allocate resources, set deadlines and select optimal forms of media for projects
Collaborate closely with internal clients and stakeholders to help facilitate the creation of multimedia content
Develop production schedules, manage video library, evaluate analytics, and ensure ADA compliance for program offerings
Work closely with video management system and web design vendors to enhance functionality and create seamless user experiences
Technical Project Management
Manage technical projects with top-down oversight throughout entire execution to ensure success as defined by adherence to standards of scope, budget, and timeline
Develop comprehensive project plans that merge stakeholder requirements with university goals and coordinate various managers and technical personnel during all project phases, from initial development through implementation
Monitor project progress continuously and make detailed scheduled reports on measurable items, such as milestones and deliverables
Communicate proactively with all involved personnel to provide encouragement, identify problems, create solutions, and implement efficiency improvements
Review proposed modifications on project plans, including meeting with interested parties to approve and implement beneficial changes
Bachelor's degree required.
5 years of related experience in Alumni Relations, academic program administration, academic program development or a related area of higher education administration.
Master's degree preferred.
Demonstrated success in project management and/or curriculum design, building relationships, and engaging constituents, preferably in an institution of higher education, is preferred. The candidate should possess strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, experience with video and digital platforms, and supervisory experience preferred. The candidate must have the ability to translate complex academic information in an understandable, accurate and engaging manner. The candidate should have experience with speaker management, coaching and coordination particularly with faculty or high-level administrators.
Fast-paced, highly variable, and entrepreneurial, this role is best suited for an individual with a strategic mindset, collaborative instincts, high adaptability and creativity, intellectual curiosity, and an interest in advancing the mission of one of the world's great research universities and academic medical centers.
The candidate must be able to work on the Homewood campus 2-3 days per week and work remotely (or in a hoteling space) for the remainder of the week. The candidate must be able and willing to work evenings and weekends as needed, including occasional travel to manage events or meet with key faculty or alumni volunteers.
